It must be able to meet its goals and objectives whether it is in a state of normal operation or under some sort of stress or in a hostile environment. A discussion on survivable computer systems can be a very complex and far reaching one. However, in this article we will touch on just a few of the basics.</p>
<p>Computer Security And Survivable Computer Systems<br />&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br />Survivable computer systems and computer security are in many ways related but at a low-level very much different. For instance, the hardening of a particular system to be resistant against intelligent attacks may be a component of a survivable computer system. It does not address the ability of a computer system to fulfill its purpose when it is impacted by an event such as a deliberate attack, natural disaster or accident, or general failure. A survivable computer system must be able to adapt, perform its primary critical functions even if in a hostile environment, even if various components of the computer system are incapacitated.  In some cases, even if the entire &#8220;primary&#8221; system has been destroyed. </p>
<p>As an example; a system designed to provide real-time critical information regarding analysis of specialized medications ceases to function for a few hours because of wide spread loss of communication. However, it maintains the validity of the data when communication is restored and systems come back online. This computer system could be considered to have survived under conditions outside of its control.</p>
<p>On the other hand, the same system fails to provide continuous access to information under normal circumstances or operating environment, because of a localized failure, may not be judged to have fulfilled its purpose or met its objective.</p>
<p>Fault Tolerant And Highly Availability Computer Systems<br />&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<br />Many computer systems are designed with fault tolerant components so they continue to operate when key portions of the system fail. For instance; multiple power supplies, redundant disk drives or arrays, even multiple processors and system boards that can continue to function even if its peer component is destroyed or fails. The probability of all components designed to be redundant failing at one time may be quite low. However, a malicious entity that knows how the redundant components are configured may be able to engineer critical failures across the board rendering the fault tolerant components ineffective.</p>
<p>High availability also plays a role in a survivable computer system. However this design component may not maintain computer system survivability during certain events such as various forms of malicious attack . An example of this might be a critical web service that has been duplicated, say across multiple machines, to allow continuous functionality if one or more the individual web servers was to fail. The problem is that many implementations of high availability use the same components and methodology on all of the individual systems. If an intelligent attack or malicious event takes place and is directed at a specific set of vulnerabilities on one of the individual systems, it is reasonable to assume the remaining computer systems that participate in the highly available implementation are also susceptible to the same or similar vulnerabilities. A certain degree of variance must be achieved in how all systems participate in the highly available implementation.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s The Difference Between An Attack, Failure, And Accident? <br />How Do These Differences Impact A Survivable Computer System<br />&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<br />In many cases when I am discussing the security of systems with customers, the question of business continuity and disaster recovery come up. Most companies that provide a service that they deem critical just know the system needs to be operational in a consistent manner. However, there is typically little discussion about the various events or scenarios surrounding this and that can lead to great disappointment in the future when what the customer thought was a &#8220;survivable computer system&#8221; does not meet their expectations. Some of the items I like to bring up during these conversations is what their computer systems goal and objective is, what specifically does continuous operation mean to them, and specifically what constitutes an attack, failure, or accident that can cause loss of operation or failure to meet objectives. </p>
<p>A failure may be defined as a localized event that impacts the operation of a system and its ability to deliver services or meet its objectives. An example might be the failure of one or more critical or non-critical functions that effect the performance or overall operation of the system. Say, the failure of a module of code that causes a cascading event that prevents redundant modules from performing properly. Or, a localize hardware failure that incapacitates the computer system.  </p>
<p>An accident is typically an event that is outside the control of the system and administrators of a local / private system. An example of this would be natural disasters such as hurricanes, if you live in south Florida like I do, or floods, or wide spread loss of power because the utility provider cut the wrong power lines during an upgrade to the grid. About two years ago, a client of mine who provides web based document management services could not deliver revenue generating services to their customers because a telecommunications engineer cut through a major phone trunk six blocks away from their office. They lost phone and data services for nearly a week. </p>
<p>An now we come to &#8220;attack&#8221;. We all know accidents will happen, we know that everything fails at one time or another, and typically we can speculate on how these things will happen. An attack, executed by an intelligent, experienced individual or group can be very hard to predict. There are many well known and documented forms of attacks. The problem is intelligence and human imagination continuously advance the form of malicious attacks and can seriously threaten even the most advanced designed survivable computer systems. An accident or failure does not have the ability to think out of the box or realize that a highly available design is flawed because all participants use the same design. The probability that an attack might occur, and succeed may be quite low, but the impact may be devastating.</p>
<p>Conclusion<br />&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br />One of the reasons I wrote this article was to illustrate that it&#8217;s not all about prevention. Although prevention is a big part of survivable computer system design, a critical computer system must be able to meet its objectives even when operating under hostile or stressful circumstances. Or if the steps taking for prevention ultimately prove inadequate. It may be impossible to think of all the various events that can impact a critical computer system but it is possible to reasonably define the possibilities.</p>

<p>&#8220;Simple is best.&#8221; Often true, but not always practical. &#8220;The more complex a system is, the more there is to go wrong.&#8221; This applies to a computer operating system as much as to a car, and the security aspect of an operating system is no exception.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, some operating systems are more secure platforms for Web servers than others.</p>
<p>As suggested earlier, the more flexible and powerful an operating system is, the more vulnerable it is to attack via its Web server and, indeed, its other servers.</p>
<p>Although Unix aficionados might cringe at this statement, Unix systems, with all their integral servers, services, text editors, scripting languages, interpreters, etc., are very vulnerable, simply because there are so many entry points that can be exploited by hackers. On the other hand, less sophisticated systems, like a Macintosh or a purpose-built Web server machine, are more difficult to compromise. Taking it to the extreme, the most secure Web site would reside on a basic Macintosh with a basic Web server.</p>
<p>Of course, it is very unlikely that anyone would opt for a Mac for the sake of security, and sacrifice the superior performance of a multi-tasking operating system such as Unix or Windows NT, not to mention the additional functionality of middleware control and database transactions that these offer. Unfortunately, holes are continually being found in the security of both Windows NT server and Unix operating systems.</p>
<p>Between the two, the Unix operating system is generally more secure than Windows NT. The reason is twofold. Unix has been around for a very long time, and the serious bugs have been found and fixed. Furthermore, the Unix user account and file systems are far simpler. There is therefore less likelihood of human error or poor judgment when configuring them. Provided that the system is well configured, with security updates applied as soon as they become available, a Unix system is likely to be more secure than a Windows NT system.</p>
<p>Human error and poor judgment have already been mentioned. When choosing an operating system for a Web server, an assessment of the expertise of the people responsible for its operation should be made. A Windows NT system configured and maintained by an experienced Windows NT system administrator is likely to be more secure than a Unix system administered by an inexperienced Unix system administrator. If an external hosting company is used for the Web server, and more than one operating system is offered, it is advisable to find out whether there is technical staff dedicated to only one or the other, rather than staff with general expertise.</p>

Training can be completed at various levels ranging from certificates to a doctoral degree.</p>
<p>Training can be completed in areas such as electronics and electrical engineering. Students who choose to pursue the educational training needed for a career in these areas can do so by earning a variety of certificates and degrees. Certificate programs will vary by area chosen but may require students to spend anywhere from six months to one year on studies. </p>

<p>There are more operating systems available on the market than ever before, giving consumers more choices and flexibility. The vast array of choices also allows users to customize a system to their specific needs.</p>
<p>An operating system is effectively the brains of your computer, turning your raw hardware into a thinking machine. It is vital to your computer&#8217;s operations, allowing it to install and run programs, and use peripherals, and share information with other users; all of which pretty well covers everything your computer does. It is the first thing installed on your computer, and it is useless without one.</p>
<p>Most of the popular operating systems use GUI (graphic user interface). GUI allows users to interact with their computer&#8217;s operating system visually, usually through a mouse. These operating systems include all versions of Windows for personal computers and OS for Apple computers.</p>
<p>Operating systems fall into a few broad categories, as least as their popularly used; Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.</p>
<p>Windows 1 was released on November 20, 1985. </p>
<p>It was culmination of nearly a decade of work on the part of software engineers to develop a user-friendly operating system. Since then, Windows has become a business standard in use all over the world.</p>
<p>While Windows is by far the dominant operating system on personal computers, it is not the only one. Linux is a Unix-based operating system developed by software engineer Linus Torvalds. Linux is unique in the family of operating systems because it doesn&#8217;t come as a finished product.</p>
<p>Linux is an open source kernel of an operating system. This means that Linux is a simple, bare bones operating system for which the code is readily available to any programmer that wants to take a crack at adding on to it or improving it. </p>
<p>These improved versions are called distributions, and can be made to suit any number of different types of users or applications.</p>
<p>No single company owns the rights to Linux. There is no Linux company, though a number of websites and businesses have grown up around writing distributions and creating an active community of users and programmers.</p>
<p>Because Linux is so customizable and flexible, it has become a favorite of IT professionals, corporate servers, and power users generally.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s Mac OS operating systems have also benefited from a lineage that can be traced to Unix. Mac OS X, the latest incarnation of Mac OS, can be customized by the user to trim back features the user doesn&#8217;t need, which can speed up the machine considerably. Amateurs beware! It can take years of study and practice to do this effectively and should only be approached by those serious enough to learn what it takes. Here, a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing indeed.</p>
<p>The book is far from finished when it comes to operating system research and development. Brain trusts all over the world continue to research the possibilities in making operating systems smarter, more efficient, and more adaptive. These organizations include the University of Washington, Sun Microsystems Inc, Xerox PARC, and Sony&#8217;s computer science laboratory. </p>

You don&#8217;t need to know any complicated commands settings or codes to be able to use a computer with the aid of <b>computer operating system</b>.</p>
<p>Right in the first few years of computers, operating systems was not in existence. But after the invention of powerful computers, operating systems where developed. What is known as punch cards was being used to enter information&#8217;s onto a computer before operating systems came to existence. To get the desired information&#8217;s needed on computers, punch card machines where used. But they were not all that efficient.</p>
<p>Then some &#8216;<b>computer programmers</b>&#8216; had a good vision. They thought it would be wonderful if everyone could simply use a computer without having to know all tll the complicated programming languages of a computer. They began designing the <b>first computer operating systems</b>, and soon found success in producing what is now generally known as <b>Computer Operating System</b> (OS). </p>
<p>With the success of early computer programmers, there are so many computer operating systems these days available in the world of computers today. New &#8216;Computer Operating Systems&#8217; are developed every now and then. Virtually most of resent operating systems are designed with the common user in mind. An average computer user can now load most computer programs with a simple use of a mouse and just a few clicks.</p>
<p>Every computer operating system has a specific function to perform behind the scenes. The user will not even be able to see or even need to know that they are there. What these operating systems do behind your computer is commonly known as multiple tasking. It makes using a PC much more easily without managing computer resources manually.</p>
<p>Among the main basic functions every computer operating system does perform include: Managing your Random Access Memory (RAM), managing your Hard Disc, scheduling of various tasks on your computer, providing a reasonable level of security to your computer, to prevent any external party to gain access to your PC, to navigate various programs on your PC whenever you want to open them and much more.</p>
<p>Microsoft Windows and Apple&#8217;s Mac OS are the worlds most <b>famous operating systems</b> today. Other similar operating systems do exist also. But they got their technologies from the world&#8217;s famous two computer leading giants.</p>
<p>There are two <b>other operating systems</b> that are rapidly gaining popularity in the world of computers today. They are Linux and GNU. But they are mainly focused on the network and system marketing industry to be specific.</p>
<p>The different ways we freely use our computers today in our homes and offices, are only possible with the help and technology of operating systems. We would have remained in the primitive ages today, without the evolution of <b>computers and operating systems</b>.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you have not already been introduced to it, WiMax is the latest development in wireless telecommunications technology that are opening doors to high-speed Internet for users all over the country.  The term is short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access and refers to the system responsible for bringing fully mobile Internet access to people who are constantly on the go, as well as long-range high-speed broadband coverage to people who do not have wired connections like DSL and cable at their disposal. <br/><br/>To a certain degree, WiMax is sort of like Wi-Fi, in that it projects Internet signals directly to computers in a network without relying on wires, cables, or phone lines.  However, a single WiMax system can reach many more people than a Wi-Fi network.  This is because it uses a tower, which operates somewhat in the same way as a cell phone tower, to deliver coverage to large areas spanning as many as 3,000 square miles.  People can use their cell phone, or laptop or desktop computer, to get online from anywhere within this entire area. <br/><br/>This is fantastic news for people with long commutes to work, who want to be able to check emails and access other websites on the go, as well as for people who just want to take advantage of this technology for entertainment purposes (streaming audio and video, for example).  And it can be completely life-changing for people living in rural or remote locations who up until now have likely had to suffer the painfully sow connection speeds that come with dial-up service. <br/><br/>So how does it work?  There are two parts to a WiMax sytem.  It all starts with the aforementioned tower, which itself can connect to the Internet using a wired connection, or through a line-of-sight microwave link with a tower which has a wired connection.  This second way is what accounts for such widespread and accessible service, as a chain of wireless towers can be created to extend coverage to areas where wired connections are hard or impossible to come by. <br/><br/>In addition to the tower, there is also something called a receiver.  This is what users need in order to be able receive the signal transmitted by the tower.  There are a few different types of receivers available.  They can come as external boxes and antennas that you connect to your computer, or they can be built-in devices that you don&#8217;t even see. <br/><br/>Regardless of the type, there are two ways for a user&#8217;s receiver to tap into signals: line-of-sight service and non-line-of-sight service.  As the name implies, line-of-sight requires that the receiver be able to &#8220;see&#8221; the tower, meaning there must be nothing in between the two.  To get this type of service, a user will need to mount a fixed dish antenna on their roof.  Likewise, for non-line-of sight service, the receiver is attached to the computer itself and can pick up the signal from pretty much anywhere.  This type of service, though less strong, is what makes WiMax mobility possible. <br/><br/></p>
