Adobe Reader

Adobe Reader formally known as Acrobat Reader is available as a free download from the Adobe website (www.adobe.com). This software can be used on all current operating systems. To create .LIT files, Read in Microsoft Reader is an add-on from Microsoft which can be used with Microsoft Word. Microsoft Reader also works on Pocket PCs that run on the Windows Mobile operating system.

eReader

eReader is a free program which is available at www.ereader.com. It displays e-books which end in the “.PDB” format. Versions are available for computers which run on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh. There are also versions for the iPhone, iPod Touch, Symbian phone operating system, Blackberry, PalmOS and Pocket PC/Smartphones that run on Windows Mobile. To create .pdb documents, the free DropBook application also from http://www.ereader.com can be used.

Mobipocket Reader

Mobipocket Reader is free software from Mobipocket.com (www.mobipocket.com). It displays e-books which end in the “.PRC” format. Mobipocket Reader has a version which runs on Windows-based personal computers. Other versions include those made for PDAs, Smartphones; BlackBerry, Symbian, PalmOS and Windows Mobile devices. There are also versions for e-book reading devices like Kindle, Cybook, iLiad and Psion. The Mobipocket Reader software version for Windows personal computers allows a user to import other file formats such as PDF, HTML, TXT and DOC. These are then converted into the PRC format for viewing. On attaching a supported hand-held device to your computer for the first time, Mobipocket Reader automatically installs the appropriate version of the software to that device and allows you to send e-books to it.

FBReader

FBReader (which stands for FictionBookReader) is a free and open-source program for reading e-books for computers on all platforms including Linux. It is for reading e-books created in the FictionBook format which end in “.FB2”. It also supports a wide variety of formats such RTF (Rich Text Format), HTML, PRC (unprotected files only), TXT and so on. It is available for download from www.fbreader.org. FBReader also has versions for Nokia tablet devices like the Nokia 770 and Google Android-based phones.

Lexcycle Stanza

Lexcycle Stanza is a free program for reading e-books created in a variety of formats for personal computers which run on Windows and Macintosh. This software is available for download from www.lexcycle.com. It displays books in formats like Microsoft’s LIT (unprotected files only), HTML, DOC (Microsoft Word), AWZ (Amazon Kindle’s proprietary format), PDF, etc. There is also a version for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Okular

Okular is a free e-book reader and document viewer for computers which run KDE 4 (the desktop environment for Unix-based computers such as Linux). Okular also works across others platforms like Windows and Macintosh. It supports such formats as PDF, HTML, EPUB, FB2, and so on. It is available for download from http://okular.kde.org.

PyBookReader

This is a free e-book reader written in the Python programming Language for Linux, FreeBSD and other such operating systems. It is an open-source program. It is available for download from www.sourceforge.net/projects/pybookreader.

Either you buy a new computer or just use the old computer and make it productive again. The choice is yours! But if you only use the computer for simple tasks such as creating a document, recording some sound files, watching some DVD’s and playing your music collections. You might want to give it a chance and be more productive again in the next couple of years. And that is absolutely free. Thanks to Barry Kauler for his genius crafts.

If you have taken the time to read my bio you will notice that I’m biased towards the belief that computer operating systems should be inexpensive or even better free. Several years ago I stumbled upon Unix while working out in the field as a computer support specialist. I became fascinated by this different type of operating system controlling one of the servers at a client’s place of business. Wanting to know more I decided to do some research as to what Unix was all about. It was during this time I was introduced to the world of free operating systems and free software.

These people remain, to this day, dedicated to improving Linux as well as creating software that meets or exceeds the needs of the those choosing to use the above.

Ubuntu is just one such version of Linux that is fast becoming the most user friendly operating systems. Ubuntu comes packaged with software most used by all of us. You will find applications such as Open Office, equivalent to the Windows version of Microsoft Office. You will find everything from games to Internet browsers, programming to sound and video and much much more. All of this free and supported. Have a problem with a certain software package? You will find the anwers available only a few keystrokes away. Type your problem in a browser and you will find a forum or website with the answer. If the answer isn’t there, just submit your request for help and someone will be eager to help you.

Since Ubuntu Linux is free and open source this means the program coding is also accessible. For those who are familiar with programming, this becomes a great advantage to changing the operating system or software as you see fit. Another advantage is that you can get involved by providing feedback as to your likes or dislikes. If you are a programmer you can tweek some of the software and submit it to be passed along to other like minded people wanting to see that Linux and the software packages remain free to use for everyone.

Linux- computer operating system for future

Let’s talk about computer operating systems (OS). Most of my friends uses Windows operating systems on their computers, and I used Windows for 7 years, of course in that time I’ve been heard about linux, FreeBSD, etc. I thinked like majority computer users: “There is no better operating system than Windows, because good things “must” have their price”.

But wait.. couple days ago I’ve installed Ubuntu 10.10 LTS on my computer.

And what I found:

1. Very speedy boot time, and of course shutdown time;

2. Installation takes about 20 minutes;

3. All needed programs : writing, calculating, making presentations, browsing internet, listening music, watching video, integration in social networks are installed with OS and huge amount of open source alternatives can be found with ubuntu software center.

4. Full localizations for almost every country.

5. Very stable ext4 file system.

6. Comparing with windows- ubuntu has full automated all of the proceses.

7. Huge amount of visual themes.

8. I know 7 versions of Windows system, but how much distributions are for linux.. I think uncountable, everyone can find something special for himself.

9. When I install windows I need to take a hour finding drivers, when installed ubuntu only thing I needed just automatically install video card driver.

10. And of course price- for free, no need of registrations and activations.

What is Linux?

Linux is an operating system, like Microsoft Windows, MacOS, or Unix. It was created as a hobby by Linus Torvalds, a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland. What most people don’t know about Linux is that its source code is available to anyone. The Linux source code is called the kernel and it is the base of the Linux operating system.
