Information Technology: Current Events in India

Article by John Parks

In a few brief decades of human history, information technology has permeated every corner of the world and every facet of the human experience. Nowhere is this phenomenon more marked than in India. India’s high availability of technically trained workers, who are also multilingual, make it extremely competitive on the world economic stage. Indian Institutes of Technology are recognized for their excellence on an international scale. The Information Technology sector in India is mostly taken up by software and and services like, system integration, application development and maintenance or CADM, consulting, software testing, and internet services. Companies like Wal-Mart, Intel, Cisco, Oracle and Dell are continuing to look to India’s Information Technology organizations to provide technology services.

Recent economic downturns have affected India, not unlike other parts of the globe. However, recent events make an early recovery in India’s information technology companies, promising. India’s largest exporter of computer software, Tata Consultancy Services, Ltd. reports a 29% increase in second quarter 2009 profits. While the profits are attributed to both new orders and cost control decisions, it is not the only firm to report results that were better than anticipated. Infosys, as well is reporting an upswing. Overall, third quarter results are up around 16 billion rupees, as compared to last year’s 13 billion during the same time period. TCS plans to add 8000 employees to its rolls to meet the anticipated increased demands in the coming year. In other developments, India’s Polaris Software Lab Ltd. has agreed to purchase Laser Soft Infosystems Ltd. Laser Soft provides information technology services in the banking industry. The purchase, for approximately 520 million rupees will add 600 people to Polaris’ 9,000 and 40 financial institutions to Polaris’ holdings. The banking technology market is predicted to experience continued near-term growth. Payment processing and other banking infrastructure and transaction systems are anticipated to lead the momentum as worldwide economic recovery continues to unfold.

Shifting technology support and consultancy services to India has proven to be a significant source of cost control for many of the world’s technology companies. Mergers and acquisitions by organizations such as NASDAQ listed Cognizant with UBS India Service Centre put the world on notice that information technology resources in India are desirable assets to acquire. One such jewel in India’s crown, Proteans has recently been named to Software Magazine’s Software 500 list. Inclusion on this list puts Proteans on a preferred list of business partners for the world’s large corporations.

Although India has experienced challenges to its status as a premier locale for outsourcing this type of work from China, The Philippines and Eastern Europe, India’s superior training in, not only technology, but languages is anticipated to keep it out front of its competition. Growth in the telecommunications industry will also fuel future growth in India. The ability to distribute telecommunications capability to outlying areas of the country allows for these areas to become resources for workforce talent. Nearly no information technology advancement that has occurred in the world over the last few decades without India’s involvement or influence. The future seems to predict ongoing success.

Entry Level Information Technology Advice: No background in IT? These are the certs you start off with…

Article by Georgia Stath

At the beginning of your entry level information technology stage? No doubt you are confused with the so many certifications out there. I’ll make things very simple. If you are a total newbie go for the Comptia’s A+ Cert – actually most professionals get this regardless of experience.

As we are working with computers, A+ gives you an overall rounded knowledge on how to build them, fix them and troubleshoot them. And it looks good on your resume too.

But I don’t know what my role will be!!!

Most of us don’t. We love working with computers yet are unsure what our role will eventually be. That’s ok. As you work in the industry things will become clearer. Concentrate on getting your first cert. Enjoy the process. Feel the exhiliration of becoming certified. Find yourself an entry level information technology job. Gain experience and things will sort themselves out from there on.

Work yourself up the ladder

We all start at the bottom regardless of whether we want all to start at the top!! Work yourself up the ladder with your certs and with your experience. Start with A+ cert to learn about computers. Then study for your network+ exam. This will give you knowledge in networking. Next is the MCDST which is a microsoft cert specializing in customer support for the Microsoft products (which most businesses use anyway).

Get your first Certs, then stop!!

Don’t go cert crazy. After you pass the exam and your certification arrives in the mail, you feel exhilirated with the hard work you have put in and the hard work that paid off. But restrain yourself from going overboard. You only need those mentioned to get yourself an entry level job. Too many certs can actually harm your chances of a entry level information technology job.

How easy is it to get certified?

If you are going for your first cert and haven’t worked in the industry before, it will be a voyage of uncertainty. But it’s an exciting one! Find yourself some study material, book your exam. Pass!!! All this will be unfamilair but with your second cert you would have aced the process.

No cert is ‘easy’ but all are doable. Depending on your experience and time you have to study, devote 3-6 months to gaining certification.

What’s the best way to study?

Most I.T professionals will advise entry level information technology candidates to self study. This means either buying books, either buying CBT (computer based training, or in other words cds with videos on them) and studying by yourself at your own pace at your own time. I.T schools are expensive and a high percentage don’t recommend them for that reason.

Use free info on the web to help with your studies

If you don’t use the web to suppliment your primary study material then you are missing out big time. Buy a book or two or a CBT course and then use the web for free info. Use youtube.com for free videos that show you how to do something and wikipedia. Just by seeing something done or reading another persons take on a particular subject will help reinforce and/or learn something new from the material you have bought.

Where do you book your exam?

When you know you are reading, you book your exam(s) through prometric.com or vue.com.

Good luck!!!

Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication Technology is the technology used to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information by using electronic computers, communication devices and software applications.

Information refers to the knowledge we own through our daily  routine whereelse communication is the act of transmitting message using symbol, sign or verbal interactions to exchange information with each other. On the other hand, technology is used to create processes and products that fulfill mankind needs by using scientific knowledge, experiences and resources.

History of Information and Communication Technology

Human had used technology to transmit message and information since many years ago. In 3500bc, cuneiform writting was developed. In 1500bc, alphabet was created. This is followed by the developement of paper, printing machine, telegraph line, telephone, television, computer, photocopier machine and much more. Even though the technology used in the past is less advance, but they had lead to the invention of more efficient technology such as internet and communication satellite.

The technology timeline:

cuneiform writing(3500BC)
alphabet (1500BC)
paper (105BC)
printing machine(1454)
telegraph line(1793)
telephone(1876)
television(1925)
computer(1941)
photocopier machine(1958)
satellite(1963)
Internet(1969)

In older days, computer was used just as the counting machine. However as the user demand increases, more and more function had been added to computer. Therefore a more complex computer had been invented and the evolution of computer began.

The Health Information Technology Field is Growing

Article by Christine Harrell

The health technician field is not only one that is expected to see above average growth in the next several years, but is also one that will continue to see changes in job responsibilities.Working in this field usually means the business environment will be a pleasant and comfortable office setting. This is one of the few medical fields that does not include direct, hand-on contact with patients. The typical work week is 40 hours, though there may be some overtime. In facilities that are open 24 hours a day, technicians may work day, evening or night shifts.

Medical information and record technicians usually have at least an associate’s degree. Course work in the field will include medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, data requirements and standards, data analysis, clinical classification and codifying systems, data base security and management, insurance reimbursement and quality improvement methods. Taking math, biology, chemistry, health and computer science courses in high school can improves an applicant’s standing when applying to a post-secondary school.

Many employers will prefer to hire credentialed technicians. Credentialing programs often will require re-credentialing and continuing education. Obtaining a bachelor’s or master’s degree, or an advanced specialty certification, can help with career advancement for someone experienced in the health information technology field. Those with a bachelor’s or master’s degree can often become an information manager.

The U.S. Department of Labor projects employment for medical records and information technicians to increase by 20 percent through 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations through that time. As the population continues to age, more medical tests, treatment and procedures will be required. Those technicians that can demonstrate a strong understanding of technology and computer software likely will be particularly in demand.

As the use of electronic medical records continues to increase, more technicians will also be needed. In fact, the U.S. Health and Human Services Department recently announced it would be awarding $ 267 million to several non-profit organizations to establish Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers, which will help grow this emerging field. These centers will provide support to medical practitioners as they transition to electronic records. In 2008, the most recent numbers available, the median wage was $ 30,618. The middle 50 percent of workers in the field earned between $ 25,000 and $ 40,000. The upper 10 percent earned $ 50,000.

The health information technology field is one that will continue to have very good job prospects due to constant changes in computer and medical technology combined with an aging population.

What The Emerging Information Technologies Are

Article by Arturo Chuong

People who are interested in the subject, even if they are not experts, usually want to know what is new in information technologies. There are so many new things going on that only a few new things can be mentioned here. However, this will give a few of the emerging information technologies which are improving and in use.

One of the trends that is being put to use right now is semiconductor technology. This is where microchips are being used to transmit information quickly. This technology was being used in the 1970s with automobiles, however, they are virtually everywhere now. Microchips with microelectomechanical systems are being in used in many small devices to carry information.

Examples of these devices are ink jet printers and hard disk drives heads. They are also seen in accelerometers which deploy airbags. The reason that this technology is so popular is because it is becoming very fast yet it is very economical. The cheaper something is yet is functional the more marketable it is.

The next thing that is advancing in technology is information storage. Disk drives and other forms have improved with their speed and capacity to store. This is also becoming less costly which is many times the goal in this business. It is noted this is the form that information is stored in mainly compared to other forms. As we have seen over the past couple of decades, computers have gone down in price considerably. This is because the advanced technology which does not cost as much.

The next emerging technology is networking. More and more, computers are becoming connected either in local area networks or wide area networks. The reason that networking has grown as it has is because of the advent of optic fibers. Nothing shows how networking has increased exponentially like how the use of the internet has exploded.

Another example of why information technology has emerged the it has is because there are so many applications. If one looks at a computer, there are so many different applications like word processing, spreadsheets, and so much other software. It is almost impossible to think that things will slow down in this field requiring the use of IT specialists for years to come.

There are many other forms of emerging technologies which can be found either online or in IT journals. Many people are working on new projects which may be the next success story.

The world of information technology may seem like it is overloaded because of all of the products that are out now, but there is probably more new technologies yet to be discovered. This is still a virtually young field in that with as much progress has been made, it has happened in the past 20 to 30 years. Many business types that IT helps still have many places to grow to help their target consumers or audience. This is a topic that one can say stay tuned for what else might come up to help a large population out there.

The Benefits Of Outsourcing Your Companys Information Technology

Running an IT department in any business can be expensive. But especially for medium to small sized businesses, the benefits of outsourcing an IT department may far outweigh the costs. Businesses considering information technology outsourcing can gain even more benefit by doing it domestically.

Outsourcing Locally

Domestic outsourcing, or onshore outsourcing, can prove particularly helpful for companies needing assistance with relatively short but intense projects. In these cases, companies only pay for IT services when they’re needed. They avoid having to pay an employee during idle time between projects.

Additionally, a company that is located in the United States is usually better able to deliver services and products due to its geographic proximity to the client company. Business experts point out companies considering domestic outsourcing can get even greater benefits by using an IT consultant company in the same city. For example, information technology staffing Pittsburgh companies should use information technology staffing Pittsburghconsulting companies.

Onshore information technology outsourcing also eliminates language barriers. Misinterpretations of corrections due to problems with translation or other language issues not only results in unneeded revisions to the project, but it can be detrimental to the final product as well. With those looming issues, any cost savings associated with offshore outsourcing to a foreign country will be quickly eaten up.

For companies that need good customer communication relations through their IT department, domestic outsourcing also has advantages. Using an IT consultancy within the same geographic area, affords better communication with customers since the consultants’ employees understand the regional dialects and other features.

Additionally, the cost between onshore and offshore outsourcing have come closer together. In fact, many domestic outsourcing IT companies in rural areas are able to beat the fees associated with outsourcing companies based in countries outside the United States.

Outsourcing Can Save Money

For the client company itself, outsourcing information technology departments domestically makes long-term financial sense as well. Companies save costs on payroll, benefits, and other personnel overhead in their in-house IT departments, by moving those services to a domestic IT consultant company. Those savings can allow the company better profits and also better cash flow for research, marketing, and product development.

Business leaders that have made the decision to outsource IT departments domestically, also report better project results. Consulting IT companies usually are able to higher the most talented staff. That can result in better project outcomes then when a company uses in-house staff. Why often in-house IT departments are also tasked with other parts of the business operation. That can cause distractions which can lead to lesser quality work.

Energy conservation can not ignore the information technology – data center green IT, IBM, server -

Article by jekky

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in his department environmental documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” had expressed, for saving our planet, and everyone can do, including the use of energy-saving products, to develop energy-efficient habits. From the IT point of view, not only in the product itself to the green, it is necessary to help, through information technology Other Industry to achieve energy saving. Can not ignore the energy consumption dataRecently, the National Development and Reform Commission, the International Cooperation Center and sponsored by IBM, “Information technology and energy saving” forum, the State Development and Reform Commission Zhang, director of international cooperation rushed IDG reporters that the current government of China 80 billion yuan per year energy consumption, 50% of energy consumption from IT products. IBM Greater China chief executive officer of the money crowd is to IDG (www.cnw.com.cn), told reporters that as China’s rapid economic growth, the size of China’s economy accounted for nearly 5% of the world However, China needs energy and resource consumption accounting for nearly 15% of the world. In addition, Zhang Chong, said, in recent years, energy consumption in IT products 8% ~ 10% annual growth rate. According to estimates, 2007, China’s total power consumption of IT products from 300 billion to 50,000,000,000 degrees, almost equivalent to China’s Three Gorges power station generating capacity a year, of which the energy consumption of data center IT products accounted for 40% of the total energy consumption. Not only that, according to industry estimates, IT products carbon dioxide emissions from power at least to the 35 million tons. “In this context, the development of energy saving, environmental protection, high efficiency as the core values of green IT products and related technologies, will be leading a new generation of IT products focus on innovative content revolution.” Zhang Chong said. State Information Center, Ning Jiajun, chief engineer, said the Shanghai Supercomputing Center’s supercomputer speed of 10 trillion times per second, light consumption of electricity per year reached 4.8 million yuan, the equivalent of a small county power scale. Even so, the Shanghai Super Computer Center, or because the chip uses less energy to achieve this result. He said that under the original plan, the Shanghai Super Computer Center is designed system requires 5094 CPU to achieve the same performance space needs 683 square meters, the annual electricity needs of 16 million yuan to run. “It is because the lower energy consumption by the CPU, it makes to achieve the same performance, only an area of 185 square meters, while only 4.8 million yuan per year of electricity.” Ning Jiajun said, “This shows server power consumption to address the problem, the chip is a key link. ” In addition, the Ning Jiajun that in the current situation, energy conservation is an inevitable choice for all sectors, while energy saving green IT is an important way, for this reason that our country will be saving in the electronic information industry Saving more than put forward a related policies. Can not ignore the information technologyIBM China’s chief technology officer, Tian-being, IDG (www.cnw.com.cn), told reporters that information technology should be a correct view of the relationship between emission reduction and energy conservation, first need to understand the field of information technology itself how to do energy saving, There is also need to see the information technology used in other energy saving and green technology possibilities. Money crowd, said the data center itself needs not only energy saving, more importantly, through information technology to help energy conservation in all sectors of the work. For example, he said, now average per server system of its capacity to 10 million document information, but when dealing with river pollution prevention, monitoring, analysis may need to deal with 10 trillion document information per second, which made the information system high challenge.
