Information and Communication Technology

Information and Communication Technology is the technology used to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information by using electronic computers, communication devices and software applications.

Information refers to the knowledge we own through our daily  routine whereelse communication is the act of transmitting message using symbol, sign or verbal interactions to exchange information with each other. On the other hand, technology is used to create processes and products that fulfill mankind needs by using scientific knowledge, experiences and resources.

History of Information and Communication Technology

Human had used technology to transmit message and information since many years ago. In 3500bc, cuneiform writting was developed. In 1500bc, alphabet was created. This is followed by the developement of paper, printing machine, telegraph line, telephone, television, computer, photocopier machine and much more. Even though the technology used in the past is less advance, but they had lead to the invention of more efficient technology such as internet and communication satellite.

The technology timeline:

cuneiform writing(3500BC)
alphabet (1500BC)
paper (105BC)
printing machine(1454)
telegraph line(1793)
telephone(1876)
television(1925)
computer(1941)
photocopier machine(1958)
satellite(1963)
Internet(1969)

In older days, computer was used just as the counting machine. However as the user demand increases, more and more function had been added to computer. Therefore a more complex computer had been invented and the evolution of computer began.

Environmental Science And Technology Expo Highlights Communication Technology Applications Into A

At half past ten p.m. on December 3, 2002, Morocco’s largest city Shanghai, China, Monte Carlo, came 54 votes to win the right to host the World Expo 2010 the news. During the past 8 years, the Shanghai World Expo finally can look forward to Ruqierzhi eagerly. Both the opening ceremony, “the flower of friendship,” or World Expo Axis “Sunshine Valley” as well as colorful States Pavilion, technology, Environmental protection Expo has gained recognition features. By China Telecom, China Mobile jointly build the “information Communicate Hall, “but we are using cutting-edge communications technology to demonstrate on the future of the” dream “.

Communication exhibition to “dream” as the theme throughout, to the audience, “Communication Unlimited” prospects for the future of society. Visitors from outside the waiting area will be used Mobile To take part in interactive experience to start their wonderful journey.

Pavilion Theatre with fantastic special effects and big screen will vividly illustrate the future prospects of information and communication technology, and information and communication technology through the use of dream stories, and visitors can communicate through hand-held terminal and the development of an important figure in the history of the dialogue, and Dream Theater interaction within the virtual characters for an immersive audio-visual sensory experience.

“Not everyone can bring communication technology so close to ‘unlimited communication’ experience. Today, people have become accustomed to the traditional tools of communication, even in enterprises and institutions, on the call center communication technology has been gradually insensitivity, the conceptualization of unified communications, and multimedia communication applications can not lead to sufficient interest, and its application has been limited at this stage.

“visit the exhibition hall and an expert said,” can feel the future is an exciting thing, the technology as people do not care how, just concerned about what can be obtained easily and experience! This is no doubt one of the directions the development of communication technology, human re-experience, intelligence to understand user expectations and to make as much as possible consistent with reality. ”

Presented in front of the visitors continued success of ICT dream of human communication scenarios, which is behind the entire communications industry technical support. Indeed, the World Expo in such events is bound giants of the stage. But also embodied the whole industry and technological achievements, particularly the idea of innovation. In recent years, ‘technology’ frequent reference to people-oriented, many manufacturers have this as a product / system design one of the important indicators. But in the end, “people first”, “human” design concept, and ultimately to the people’s daily life and Office Applications to be Floor. As communication is so exhibited museum.

How intelligent communications technology, human? Replace human intelligence, or adapt to people’s thinking and the use of models?

“Technology will never replace human intelligence, but it can play to the limit of human wisdom, and this is the ultimate state of humanity. Technology is ultimately the life and work of human services. Call center technology Application of the same. “Feng Yuzhe International Group CEOJOYDONG that” more and more communications companies are now beginning to realize that the future development of communication technologies, intelligent, and intelligent and unified communications, call center tied to the future development of mainstream trend. However, how intelligent communications technology, all manufacturers have their own different understanding. Currently, some pro-intelligent call center companies are doing some high-end alternative to some mental functions, such as intelligent scheduling, voice analysis and so on, and has some manufacturers have done a good job. However, in the country, there are many such enterprises: their entire call center may be only a few dozen seats, the business is relatively simple, for the scheduling, traffic analysis also varied queuing policy, the basic lack access to, or used, the effect can be very small harvest. In this case, they need intelligent, is a very easy to fit their business practice and corporate work of thinking, patterns call center business systems. Such intelligence is the use of technology to serve humanity. This Expo will display the ‘dream’ is essentially the same. “

“Communications technology to ground in reality, the premise, first, the distinction between company R & D direction. The distinction must be based on business needs. Fengyu Zhe see the call center application for SMEs the key, not high-end , but easy to use, practical, with affordable, good use of. So, Feng Yuzhe intelligent call center is to do the same with the Expo Hall effect communication?? to the user wanted to use his experience. of course, high-end intelligence applications, business growth is to some extent bound to face a major application. This is the Fengyu Zhe product design and development of a general direction, including business intelligence Software Also in our product planning. Feng Yuzhe to do is to grow with business. “

Critical View of Communication Technology

Everett Rogers book, Communication Technology: The New Media in Society, is a well written, easy to understand, and facts-based work.

Rogers, however, has a tendency to over-stress the “people-empowerment” view on new communication technology.  Of course, the dominant ideology is that media and computer technologies inherently empower people and while there is some truth to this claim, it is also the case that these technologies could be used primarily to empower some people while exploiting, manipulating, and disempowering others.

Thus, whether individuals do or do not have ready access to information in the future and the skills necessary to function in an information society will determine whether the society is more or less egalitarian and democratic in the future.

The new technologies are for the most part only deployed at present in the overdeveloped countries. Currently, only one in five people in the world have telephones, much less computers or access to media technology, but proliferation of new communications technologies may help erode existing inequalities and divisions — though they may well intensify class domination and gender, race, and class inequality and subordination.

For this reason, it is also important for developing countries to devise strategies to enable its citizens to use new technologies to better themselves and to overcome existing inequalities and oppression.

Technology & Communication

A study a couple of years ago found that 63% of executives were making fewer business trips because of technology.

Instead of a plane trip, face-to-face meetings and a plane trip back, they used email, videoconferencing, or online meetings, according to the Accountemps study.

If you’re a manager who’s spending less time with a suitcase and more with a mouse, you’ll want to pay attention to the nature of the media we use, and especially when sending important messages.

A few years ago we heard a lot about etiquette in electronic messaging (netiquette) on the Internet, about needing to be conscious of how messages might be misconstrued by receivers. One of the ideas to come out of that effort was emoticons, little text symbols that aimed to make up for the loss of facial expressions and body language.

Emoticons and netiquette have pretty much disappeared, but the world of electronic communication still can be a dangerous place.

And especially dangerous if the stakes are high, as they’re likely to be when managers communicate this way.

So, let’s further explore some issues that arise when we communicate electronically, rather than face-to-face.

In my limited experience with videoconferencing, for example, I found I had to work harder just catch the words, which reduced the amount facial expression information I took in. And, if the camera adjusted to take in more facial expressions, then some body language was lost.

Think, too, about the differences in messages sent by email versus those sent as conventional printed letters. Email certainly leads to faster responses and greater efficiency. However, when sending a printed letter we proofread it both on the screen and in print.

And, the time between our initial thoughts and sending the letter is longer. That provides time for second thoughts, sober or otherwise, thoughts that might be wiser or better expressed.

Here’s one more challenge: I recently looked at the idea of being an online seminars facilitator. Participants would take part through their computers. In addition to getting a voice feed, they would also watch the screen, which would be divided into three active sections. One portion would carry my notes, another would show reader questions, and a third would show something else.

As the presenter, I think I could handle the sending. But, how would receivers handle these flows of information? In person, it’s easy to watch a speaker, see her slides on screen, and listen to her at the same time. But, is it the same taking in all this information when it comes through a computer screen and speakers?

Don’t get me wrong. I like new technologies, not because they’re replacing something else, but because they offer new options. Whether through access, price, or interactivity level, new technology opens doors to communicators.

But, we need to think about the implications for receivers when we communicate through new media. Come to think of it, didn’t Marshall McLuhan write the book on this a generation ago?

In summary: With more managers communicating through new technologies, rather than travel and face-to-face meetings, we need to consider what can happen to important messages when they are transmitted through the new media.
