Time Management and Technology

Article by Varnit Banthia

Each man is surrounded today by technology. Technology is often the reason why you waste time – the most obvious example being social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc.

But you can learn to use technology to help manage your time better too. Let us see how.

You can use your cell phone to make your To-Do-Lists. It not just gives you a complete record of things done and yet to be done, it also allows you to put reminders, notes and alarms to ensure that you do not forget to do your important tasks and you stay on par with your desired results.

There are a number of Goal-Setting softwares and websites on the internet today which you can use that not only help you break your goals into smaller achievable units but also help you to monitor your progress regularly. I will soon come up with my own set of recommended such websites and softwares.

Set timely notes or inspirational quotes in your mobile phone, computer, PDA etc that will keep you motivated on your path to success. For example, you can set up a new quote everyday on your cell phone that you may see every morning when you get up.

Try avoiding going for meetings as much as possible. Use e-mail, chat, text messaging and phone calls as much as possible. When someone requests you to meet him/her, always ask yourself these Three Questions:

1. Is it beneficial to meet this person?2. Can this work not be done through e-mail, phone, chat etc?3. If there is no way out but meeting this person, can I call him/her to the my office/home at the time that is most convenient for me?

If none of these options work out, then go meet this person but do ensure that you do not forget to do your list of daily tasks.Warning: Do not stop meeting everyone and turn into a social recluse.

These are some of the ways you can befriend technology to your advantage. Technology is therefore, a good servant but a bad master. Eventually, it all boils down to how we use technology – as a agent to save time or waste time.

Good Luck.Cheers!

Technology & Communication

A study a couple of years ago found that 63% of executives were making fewer business trips because of technology.

Instead of a plane trip, face-to-face meetings and a plane trip back, they used email, videoconferencing, or online meetings, according to the Accountemps study.

If you’re a manager who’s spending less time with a suitcase and more with a mouse, you’ll want to pay attention to the nature of the media we use, and especially when sending important messages.

A few years ago we heard a lot about etiquette in electronic messaging (netiquette) on the Internet, about needing to be conscious of how messages might be misconstrued by receivers. One of the ideas to come out of that effort was emoticons, little text symbols that aimed to make up for the loss of facial expressions and body language.

Emoticons and netiquette have pretty much disappeared, but the world of electronic communication still can be a dangerous place.

And especially dangerous if the stakes are high, as they’re likely to be when managers communicate this way.

So, let’s further explore some issues that arise when we communicate electronically, rather than face-to-face.

In my limited experience with videoconferencing, for example, I found I had to work harder just catch the words, which reduced the amount facial expression information I took in. And, if the camera adjusted to take in more facial expressions, then some body language was lost.

Think, too, about the differences in messages sent by email versus those sent as conventional printed letters. Email certainly leads to faster responses and greater efficiency. However, when sending a printed letter we proofread it both on the screen and in print.

And, the time between our initial thoughts and sending the letter is longer. That provides time for second thoughts, sober or otherwise, thoughts that might be wiser or better expressed.

Here’s one more challenge: I recently looked at the idea of being an online seminars facilitator. Participants would take part through their computers. In addition to getting a voice feed, they would also watch the screen, which would be divided into three active sections. One portion would carry my notes, another would show reader questions, and a third would show something else.

As the presenter, I think I could handle the sending. But, how would receivers handle these flows of information? In person, it’s easy to watch a speaker, see her slides on screen, and listen to her at the same time. But, is it the same taking in all this information when it comes through a computer screen and speakers?

Don’t get me wrong. I like new technologies, not because they’re replacing something else, but because they offer new options. Whether through access, price, or interactivity level, new technology opens doors to communicators.

But, we need to think about the implications for receivers when we communicate through new media. Come to think of it, didn’t Marshall McLuhan write the book on this a generation ago?

In summary: With more managers communicating through new technologies, rather than travel and face-to-face meetings, we need to consider what can happen to important messages when they are transmitted through the new media.

Navigating the Waters of the Latest Hearing Aid Technology

Article by Jon Jacobson

As denizens of the 21st century, many of us cannot help but be marveled at the incredible advance of technology and its impact on all aspects of our lives. From the moment we wake up in the morning to the moment we go to sleep at night-and even in between-our lives are permeated by the formidable capabilities and applications of modern technology. Digital and electronic technologies in particular have got us all spellbound, as they are widely considered to be the most fascinating and cutting-edge fields of technology at present. Though it is certainly not the first example of such technology to pop into people’s minds, hearing aid technology has been presenting some very exciting and dynamic advancements over the last few years, and these rapid and successive developments have left a lot of people that actually suffer from a loss in their auditory perception feeling a bit lost and confused. To help these people navigate the waters of the very latest in such technology-technology that represents their best hope for recovery of at least some degree of their hearing-here we would like to touch on the most important aspects of recent developments in this exciting and fascinating field.

What people need to understand, beyond all the different brands and models of hearing aids on the market today, is that digital and electronic technology have made it possible to reduce the size of aids drastically-really drastically! Whereas our parents and grandparents were using hearing aids that plugged up their entire ear or hung outside it-or, even worse, connected via cable to an enormous clunky box clipped to their belt-these days we have the pleasure of using extremely compact and practically invisible hearing aids. What’s so special about that? Well, there are many benefits associated with the reduced size of modern electronic/digital aids: for starters, there is the simple issue of comfort; then, there is the fact that people don’t want to have an incredibly visible and bulky thing hanging on the side of their head. This is a lifestyle issue, yet it should not be taken lightly as the efficacy of a given aid is really going to be conditioned by the willingness of the person to use it, and if they feel uncomfortable in doing so then that’s a zero sum game.

Furthermore, there is the programmability of modern hearing aids to be considered-a benefit that takes the performance of aids way beyond anything they could achieve before. Programmable via computer, users can set their aid to filter out the sound frequencies that they can detect on their own, amplify the problematic frequency bands to the extent that is necessary given their hearing loss, and then can have different configurations established for different settings (indoor vs. outdoor, for example) that they can switch between with a simply click. This sort of dynamic employment of hearing aids is great news for anyone suffering from ear trouble, and hopefully such people will learn more about these developments and take advantage of them now as opposed to later.

How Science And Technology Influenced History Modern Period

“How science technology influenced history modern period

Abstract

The development of technology over the last few decades has been experimental and exciting. There were outstanding innovations in every field which addressed the human needs specially the field of communication. Consider the fact that the castle clock developed by Al Jazari in 1206 was considered the First analog computer or the fact that the first use of the term “computer” was in 1613.It took us almost 770 years from castle clock to reach the Commodore PET (PC); and it only took us 20 years from PC to terminator style skynet.Technology has changed the way of living and inducted its inundating and outright intrusive transformations into our daily lives. The world has now transformed into a global village with innovative technology.

This paper aims to lament the remarkable transformations in the Telecommunication field that were inducted by the technological advancements. From the advent of Industrial Revolution to the invention of the latest terminator style sky net; technology ruled the era with its innovative and remarkable transformations. Transformations of all shapes and sizes seemed to grow on trees and were in abundance and are still excelling with great pace.

The term “Technology” arose from Greek word ‘techne’, which means art or craft. Generally it refers to the ways of creating or performing any thing. Science played an important role providing knowledge of application and principles of different theories of technologies which later on lead foundations of different inventions and discoveries. The rapid pace of Technology advancement has highlighted the progress of many fields of technology. Telecommunication is one of the leading technologies of the modern era. Telecommunication has played a pivotal role in connecting people of society in communication, thus transforming the world into a global village. People can store, retrieve, manipulate, receiveand transmit the data through digital technology. This digital technology can be accessed via different sources for example, personal computers, digital television, email, and telecommunication. It is not just a cock bull story .When we look through different timelines of history; we find it to be the most emerging technology.

Early people realized the importance of communication when they started using smoke as a tool for communication in 150 B.C.As the time progressed ,human curiosity lead him to discover more secrets of nature .In the modern  period of history ,this can be linked with the Industrial Revolution of 1760 ,which initially occurred in Britain and then encompassed the rest of the Europe almost first half of the century. There were drastic changes in daily  lives of masses during this time period.

The relation of science and technology paved the way for different inventions. The discovery of electromagnetism by Danish Physicist Hans Christian Oersted in 1820incited Michael Faraday’s experiments with electromagnetism in the 1830, which in turn lead the way to the invention of Electric Telegraph in 1837.

Initially, used for signaling purposes of railways, Electric telegraph became the sole communicating medium in those days. It served the purpose till 1876, when the invention of telephone overwhelmed it. Invented by Alexander Graham Bell a Briton, residing in Boston, the voice-to-voice communication between the speaker and receiver made it the popular source against its predecessor.   Soon thereafter telephone systems began a steady progress and local networks converted to regional, regional to national and national to international networks thus forming a global network of interconnection.

In 1887, a German, called Heinrich Hertz, discovered the existence of the electromagnetic waves called radio waves. It later on paved the way for GuiglielmoMarconi, to configure how to transmit messages over long distances without the use of cables and lead to the foundation of wireless telegraphy in 1897. .In 1901, the first transoceanic connection between Britainand across Atlantic region was demonstrated using Morse code and Wireless Telegraphy.

The year 1906 is another milestone in terms of communication as for the first time human voice was transmitted over the airwaves using rapid transmission. In 1920 the transmission of first British radio programme held under the banner of 2LO, which gradually lead to the foundation of BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) in 1922. In 1962 and 1963 Telstar I, Relay I and Telstar II were placed in the orbit. Since then, commercial satellites have been in constant use for transmission of telephone, Telegraph and television signals. Till 1962, the telephone calls were processed by analog means. Thereafter the calls were processed by digital means, which was done for backup support incase of weak pulses network. As compared to analog processing the digital means is expensive but it ensures the complete transmission of data incase of distortion. In 1970, a visual phone called the picture phone was introduced. Many kinds of data circuits are provided to interconnect different types of data processing facilities and telephone networks have been handling a growing volume of computer data facilitating the phenomenon of “e-learning”.Further development in communication made it more popularized among people when wireless sets or cell phones were introduced in the market, which were very much handy in terms of usage and smaller size. Today we stand in a world of mobile cell phones and the numbers of its users are constantly increasing.

Conclusion:

Telecommunication is the quintessential medium by which human society interact directly and is now largely dependent on it. People in the society, irrespective of how they are, benefit from the marvels that telecommunication concedes to them. With the induction of telecommunication, their lives already underwent through a revolution of its own. In a nutshell, progressive technology with its inundating innovations revealed the door of communication leading to vast information traveling through different timelines.

Ethernet Technology

People has known the Ethernet technology since coaxial cable connection system was created to comprise of various computers and technological devices by PARC or Palo Alto Research Center Inc. (then known as XEROX PARC). Therefore, it is the oldest yet mostly used for networking until the present day.

Three years later, a partial draft version was finished and prepared for testing. It was announced successful not only because a connection between two computers were made, but also because data transfer fruitfully took place with the speed of 3 megabytes per second.

The term Ethernet was formed by putting words Ether and Net together. Ether was picked because of the use of Fiber Optics, where light is the medium of data transportation. Net is an abbreviation for network, the community of link computers.

With its promising action of making computer connectivities possible, Ethernet later on gave life to what we now know as Local Area Networks (LANs).

Ethernet works by linking computers and other devices through cables. One end of these cables is connected to the computer, and the other is to a connector. These connectors could be Repeaters, Hubs or Switches. Connectors, such as the three, are grouped according to how they do their role in the system. Ethernet applies the cause-and-effect approach.

Firstly, a computer will summon a signal where it embeds a message. With the help of cables, the signal travels from its origin to the connector and then from the connector to the accepting computer. When the assigned computer catches the signal, it will transmit its own back to the sender and react according to the prompted information.

In a standard network, all connected computers have exactly the same boundaries.

But in more complex and larger networks, there are usually one or two computers that are in control of the interactions of the entire network.

In the present, the Ethernet technology is available in many versions. The earliest ones are the 10BASE5 (the very first standard), 10BROAD36 (the first standard that allowed long-distance connections), 10BASE2 (also known as the Cheapernet) and 1BASE5 (said to be a failure but started the following developments in Ethernet technology).

The more modernized generation of the technology came with different speed performances. The 10 megabit Ethernet was the first to step out of the previous 1Mbit/second rating. And then the Fast Ethernet, which upholds the rate of 100Mbit per second, dethroned the previous by executing ten times higher.

And then the Gigabit Ethernet was born, priding itself with an even more edgy speed of 1 gigabyte per second data transmission. The Gigabit Ethernet soon opened doors for the 10 Gigabit Ethernet, the variant that surpassed its already-powerful precedent. And today, the public is only waiting for newer versions 40 and 100 Gigabit to be released.

It is hard to imagine where we would be now without the presence of networking technologies such as the Ethernet. Even the simplest of daily actions would be very bothersome when networking automation is erased. And so, we would always have to be thankful that Ethernet was formalized and born into our world.

Time and intensity is not to scale. Notice that some have a fixed intensity, while the illuminated period is variable. This is a kind of pulse-width modulation. Others can vary the actual intensity in response to the input signal.Single-chip DLPs use a kind of “chromatic multiplexing” in which each color is presented serially. The intensity is varied by modulating the “on” time of each pixel within the time-span of one color. Multi-chip DLPs are not represented in this sketch, but would have a curve identical to the plasma display.LCDs have a constant (backlit) image, where the intensity is varied by blocking the light shining through the panel.CRTs use an electron beam, scanning the display, flashing a lit image. If interlacing is used, a single full-resolution image results in two “flashes”. The physical properties of the phosphor are responsible for the rise and decay curves.Plasma displays modulate the “on” time of each sub-pixel, similar to DLP.Movie theaters use a mechanical shutter to illuminate the same frame 2 or 3 times, increasing the flicker frequency to make it less perceptible to the human eye. Financial Technology PR Firms Have to Work Ever so Hard to Ensure That Their Clients? Needs Are Met

It seems that each and every day there is some sort of technological breakthrough that helps human beings live more efficient and less stressful lives. A human being from the twenty first century would have more than a hard time without all the technological advancements we have taken for advantage in this day and age. Just think of your everyday American struggling to wake up without instant coffee, to say nothing of have to walk or goon on horseback, infinitely extending journeys by days, weeks, or even months without the benefit of ultra fast twenty first century modes of transportation such as airplanes, trains, bullet trains, and exceptionally quick boats and other aquatic craft. It truly boggles the mind to think that just one hundred and fifty years ago, many of today’s modern conveniences would be considered nothing more than a flight of fancy of some hair brained inventor who always has his or her head in the clouds. Thusly, it is truly a thing of wonder to marvel at the various technological advancements that human beings from every economic background depend on each and every day.

However, with all the technological advancements that continue to astound us each and every day of our lives, there is a price tag for all these fantastic modern contraptions. Many individuals get suspicious of new technologies, thinking that they do not really need whatever breakthrough is currently capturing the public’s imagination. Worse yet, some people are more critical of certain advancements that they view as morally bankrupt, such as stem cell research or even advances in health care such as heart transplants. The same can be said of financial technology advancements. Many financial services providers use sophisticated, cutting edge equipment in order to provide the best services they possibly can for their clients. It stands to reason then that many of these companies have started to use the fully qualified and fully licensed services of a firm that specializes in the unique field of financial technology PR. By employing a firm that specializes in the unique field of financial technology PR, financial services providers seek to enhance their public reputations. Thus, it can be said that it is the primary and most important duty of a firm that specializes in the unique field of financial technology PR to protect a financial service provider’s image. This means that the firm that specializes in the unique field of financial technology PR has to control all the bad press that may follow in a financial service providers wake if they should use new and cutting edge financial technologies.

It may seem silly to the layman that people should fear change, but any firm that specializes in the unique field of financial technology PR worth its salt knows that this undesirable trait is all too present in the human condition. Every day, firms that specialize in the field of financial technology PR have to work tirelessly night and day to combat this unnerving notion that technology is somehow bad for human beings. To achieve this end, financial technology PR firms have to use every single tool that is available to them so that they can change the public’s viewpoint. But using clandestine suggestive psychological techniques, financial technology PR firms can slowly but surely affect how individuals think about the services of a financial services provider. If they are successful, then a financial technology PR firm can help maximize their clients’ revenue stream and increase business.

Using Technology To Market Your Business

Article by Ashley Aikers

Marketing your business is the best way to make money and improve your customer base. If you are not marketing, no one is going to know who you are and what you do. How is anyone going to buy your product if your product or service is unknown? One of the best ways to effectively market is to use the latest technology.

Technology Allows You To Do More With Less

Using social media allows you to send out messages without even being at your computer. For example, you can send out Twitter messages automatically using third party applications. It also takes absolutely no money to use the service, so it makes it easier for start up companies to use even with a tight budget.

People Prefer To Use Technology To Look Up Products And Services

Not only is it efficient to use technology to market your business, but people tend to want to use technology to find what they need. Using the Yellow Pages is outdated, Google is how people look for things these days. Getting your ads on Google and having your site ranking high in search results is the new way to get your business marketed. Know how the Internet works and take advantage of that.

Business Always Evolves

A company that stands still is going to be left behind by companies that embrace marketing techniques of today. The customer demands more interaction with the company that provides the goods and services they use. Knowing how to use technology to do this will put you at a competitive advantage. Allowing a customer to say that they were at your company, or using QR codes to provide information about your product on the fly will only encourage customers to buy your products.

Technology evolves and grows which provides businesses with new opportunities to grow and expand. A good business plan needs a marketing strategy that should be taking advantage of the newest technology. Simply sending out a flyer and putting your ad in the local grocery store won’t cut it. If your company wants to thrive, it needs to understand the way that customers think and look for goods in the marketplace.

Learning new technology is as easy as taking a couple of classes at the local library to get you started. There is no excuse for not keeping up, so stop being scared of technology and start using it to your advantage to make more money.
