October 18th 2011 – Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, will open the UK’s largest international technology event – TechWorld 2011 – held at ExCeL London from November 16 – 17.

Now in its sixth year, TechWorld is hosting more than 500 handpicked international investors and buyers from more than 50 countries, plus 1,000 of the UK’s leading technology companies and more than 100 exhibitors showcasing products during two days to generate business leads, partnerships and inward investment.

The History of transistors and its importance in modern technology

Limitations of past technologies and increased research into the structure of the atom resulted in the invention of transistors.

in available technology lead to an increased knowledge of the properties of materials with particular reference to the invention of the transistor (with particular reference to vacuum tubes and semi-conductors).

- Discuss the differences between solid state and thermionic devices and discuss why solid state devices replaced thermionic devices.

- Identify data sources, gather, and process, analyze information and use available evidence to assess the impact of the invention of transistors on society with particular reference to their use in microchips and microprocessors.

What is a Transistor?

A transistor is a device composed of semi-conductor material that can both conduct and insulate (e.g. germanium and silicon). Transistors switch and modulate electronic current. Before transistors, digital circuits were composed of vacuum tubes. The transistor was the first device designed to act as both a transmitter, converting sound waves into electronic waves, and resistor, controlling electronic current. The name transistor comes from the ‘trans’ of transmitter and ’sister’ of resistor.

A device composed of semiconductor material that amplifies a signal or opens or closes a circuit, transistors have become the major component in all digital circuits, including computer microprocessors, which now contain millions of microscopic size transistors. Prior to transistors, digital circuits used vacuum tubes, which had many disadvantages, they were larger, used more energy, and created more heat.

Transistors are used in a wide array of electronic equipment, ranging from pocket calculators and radios to industrial robots and communications satellites.

There are two types of impurities that can be added to semiconductors to increase their current-carrying capacity:

1) Donor or n-type impurity

This increases the density of electrons which act as majority charge carriers, constituting an electric current.

2) Acceptor or p-type impurity

With this type of impurity, in short, ‘holes’ are created and their movement causes a current, which results in the ‘holes’ acting as positive charge carriers.

The name Point Contact Transistor simply means that the transistor works by the effect obtained through contact of points, which is exactly what it is, as you will learn in its pages.

The Bipolar Junction Transistor – BJT – is quite self-explanatory. It means that the transistor consists of oppositely charged regions (p- or n-regions) joined pole to pole.

The other two transistors are based upon the field effect theory. This theory is none but the one discussed above i.e. use of a second voltage to control a current.

The Junction FET is a transistor that includes the oppositely charged regions joined together, while the Metal Oxide Semiconductor FET makes use of the oxide

of the semiconductor (e.g. SiO2) in order to administer the second voltage.

History of the Transistor

The transistor is an influential invention that changed the course of history for computers. The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes; the second generation of computers used transistors; the third generation of computers used integrated circuits; and the fourth generation of computers used microprocessors.

Bardeen, Shockley and Brattain, scientists at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in

Murray Hill, New Jersey, were researching the Behaviour of crystals (germanium)

as semi-conductors in an attempt to replace vacuum tubes as mechanical relays in telecommunications. The vacuum tubes that made that amplification possible but were replaced because they were extremely unreliable used too much power and produced too much heat. Another factor that caused the replacement of vacuum tubes was that, moths were attracted to the light which would short-circuit the computer. The vacuum tube, used to amplify music and voice, made long-distance calling practical, but the tubes consumed power, created heat and burned out rapidly, requiring high maintenance.

The team’s research was about to come to a fruitless end when a last attempt to try a purer substance as a contact point lead to the invention of the “point contact” transistor amplifier. In 1956, the team received the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of the transistor.

Bardeen and Brattain took out a patent for their transistor. Shockley applied for a patent for the transistor effect and a transistor amplifier. Transistors transformed

the world of electronics and had a huge impact on computer design. Transistors made of semiconductors replaced tubes in the construction of computers.

Germanium

During World War II, radio and radar were extremely important — and therefore so were rectifiers. But rectifiers had a problem known as “burn out.” Sudden bursts of electricity in the wrong direction could destroy them. So one of the tasks the US government gave scientists during the war was to produce better rectifiers.

It was the Purdue University Physics lab, led by Karl Lark-Horovitz that managed

to make them. One of the graduate students, Seymour Benzer, accidentally discovered that a crystal of germanium, a semiconductor which was not well understood at the time, could withstand higher voltage than any current rectifier.

Benzer spent over a year tinkering with germanium until he discovered that mixing in trace elements of tin could produce rectifiers that were ten times more resistant than was standard.

Most people who heard about the results wouldn’t believe it until they saw it with their own eyes. But soon germanium was established as a crucial part of semiconductor research. (from: Crystal Fire)

The Silicon Transistor

It was late afternoon at a conference for the Institute of Radio Engineers. Many people giving talks had complained about the current germanium transistors — they had a bad habit of not working at high temperatures. Silicon, since it’s right above germanium on the periodic table and has similar properties, might make a better gadget. But, they said, no one should expect a silicon transistor for years.

Then Gordon Teal of Texas Instruments stood up to give his talk. He pulled three small objects out of his pocket and announced: “Contrary to what my colleagues have told you about the bleak prospects for silicon transistors, I happen to have a few of them here in my pocket.”

That moment catapulted TI from a small start-up electronics company into a major player. They were the first company to produce silicon transistors – and consequently the first company to produce a truly consistent mass-produced transistor.

Scientists knew about the problems with germanium transistors. Germanium worked, but it had its mood swings. When the germanium heated up — a natural outcome of being part of an electrical circuit — the transistor would have too many free electrons. Since a transistor only works because it has a specific, limited amount of electrons running around, high heat could stop a transistor

from working altogether.

While still working at Bell Labs in 1950, Teal began growing silicon crystals to see

if they might work better. But just as it had taken years to produce pure enough germanium, it took several years to produce pure enough silicon. By the time he succeeded, Teal was working at Texas Instruments. Luring someone as knowledgeable about crystals as Teal away from Bell proved to be one of the most important things TI ever did.

On April 14, 1954, Gordon Teal showed TI’s Vice President, Pat Haggerty, a working silicon transistor. Haggerty knew if they could be the first to sell these new transistors, they’d have it made. The company jumped into action – four weeks later when Teal told his colleagues about the silicon transistors in his pocket, TI had already started production.

Silicon Transistors offered advantages in terms of breakdown voltage and power handling ability. Silicon was more difficult to refine because of its higher melting point, but by 1955 the first silicon transistors were commercially available. Texas

Instruments played a leading part in the early development of this technology, with its 900 and 2s series of devises.

At present, the Indian telecom market is the fastest growing in the world with the lowest tariffs and market leaders in the Indian telecom sector. The Indian Telecom Analysis (2008-2012) report by RNCOS Industry Research Solutions shows that mobile telecom segment has surpassed all other segments in the Indian telecom sector. Meanwhile the view has been expressed that a considerable degree of consolidation is due to take place in the telecom sector with the end of the tariff war among players in the Indian telecom sector. In the mean time, a big player in the Indian telecom sector, Bharti Airtel, continues to work to make its presence in the African telecom sector with its pursuit of Kuwaiti telecom company, Zain.In other updates, a international telecom company, Quippo Telecom Infrastructure and Wireless TT Info Services has acquired the tower business of telecom company, Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd. Simply North America accounts for nearly 60 per cent of India’s information technology export basket and top-tier information technology companies such as Infosys, Wipro and HCL Technologies appear to be aggressively ramping up their delivery capabilities in the region. While the information technology company Infosys Technologies has bought McCamish Systems based in Georgia, HCL Technologies has completed the acquisition and of a data centre in New Jersey.Meanwhile the information technology (IT) and and ITeS Industry Association of AP has estimated a 20 per cent increase in exports from Andhra Pradesh in the next financial year. In other developments, California-based information technology company NComputing is looking at Tier II and III cities of Uttar Pradesh for growth. Information technology exports from the state of Gujarat are expected to grow by 15-20 per cent in the financial year end 2009-10, according to Ravi Saxena, principal secretary, Department, of Science and Technology (DST), Government of Gujarat (GoG).
