The Future of Science and Technology is in Your Hands

A new programme called Sciencehorizons, sponsored by the UK government, plans to open up communication between the public, the scientists and the policy makers. Sciencehorizons encourages people to talk about their hopes and fears for technologies of the future, and will pass on their views directly back to the government. What this means is that you yourself can help shape the future of science policy today.

This exciting new scheme has just been launched, and the public is encouraged to download so called ‘discussion packs’ from the official website at Sciencehorizons The Science and Innovation Minister Malcolm Wicks said that he wants everyone, and not just the scientists to participate in this programme and share their views.

Debates generated by the ‘discussion packs’ will be recorded and passed on to the government in autumn. The results of these talks will then be used to shape future science and technology policy. The programme is funded by the Department for Trade and Industry and hopes to promote and facilitate better communications between the government and the people. “The exciting new Sciencehorizons project will help us learn what people think about the future of science and enable the scientific community to hear and respond to both their hopes and concerns for the future” said Martin Earwicker, the director of Science Museum who also heads the project.

The Internet has so far been a great catalyst in stimulating public debate about technology, science and world affairs and today, more and more blogs and virtual communities are springing up all over the world that allow all members of the public to participate in discussion and make their views heard. Sites like Scienceblog and Praetorium are giving ordinary people the chance to express their hopes and fears, and now, with the help of new initiates like Sciencehorizons, these views may play a part in ultimately shaping our own future.

How Write an Education Grant for Science or Biology Class

Science in our school curriculum has often focused too much on paperwork and too little on real applications. Life science and biology in particular are subjects that have so much potential for hands-on activities and experiments. Gardening and plant care is an ideal venue to explore with your biology or life science classes or curriculum. If you’d like to begin a gardening project in your classroom, there is grant money available to support your endeavors. Here are some areas to explore for grant funding. Each of these steps can be used as a lesson plan with your class. Assign students to research, create and give presentation. I’ve noted where in the curriculum that each task will fit.

Write out the procedure, costs and format for your gardening unit or project. Be specific and clear about what you will need, how much it will cost, where you will purchase your materials. Business math, Money math, Real-life math (some algebra applications)

Define goals and objectives: Briefly explain how it will help your class and curriculum. Use clear, specific terms. Those who award grant money are not interested in vague, esoteric concepts. They want to see measurable goals. Business English and writing

Correlate your goals with national and state curriculum objectives. Make direct references to your school’s curriculum to show how your project will meet state or board identified goals. Research

Develop a brief, punchy PowerPoint presentation which you can share with potential grant providers. Media, computer applications

Include your students in the presentation and research. These activities alone fulfill several state mandated objectives, in such areas as civics, core democratic values, budgeting, technology skills, persuasive writing, 6+1 writing traits, career preparation and exploration and more.

Share your presentation. If you teach for a charter, private or parochial school, make a presentation for your school board or to the organization who holds your charter. Communication, civics, Public speaking, Government

Search the Internet, using terms like ‘gardening grant money’, ’science curriculum grant money’, ‘grant money for classroom plants’ and similar terms. Research

List the sources available in your state and county first. These sources will be more specific and appropriate to your local area. Civics

Contact local horticultural, floral and gardening societies. Often these society members make bequests and donations, which are set aside for horticultural education or scholarships. Community, Persuasive speaking

Explore state and local universities, colleges, trade schools and vocational centers. Many schools offer horticulture, botany, and biology degrees. They maintain extension offices which provide services to community and school functions. Career Preparation

Research your state’s Department of Agriculture program. Check out the USDA links as well. Government, Research

Correspond with these sources you’ve pulled up. Email your presentation to them along with a personal letter. Business English

Enquire directly about grant money available. Try to deal directly and personally as much as possible.

Be very polite and professional: remember that in a way, this is a sales pitch. Grant administrators take this position seriously; they are responsible for an answer to the general public and tax-payers as well as simply to their supervisors. Business Applications

Write thank you notes with students. Even if you don’t get any grant money, writing letters of gratitude is a good skill for students to practice. It helps students develop awareness of and appreciation for time and energy spent on their behalf. It also helps students learn about professional ethics and behavior. Essay writing, social skills

Alien (20th Century-Fox, 1979)

Made for $ 11 million, Alien ranks as one of science fiction’s greatest horror films. The movie opens in the year 2037, where the seven-person crew of the Nostromo is awakened by “Mother,” the ship’s super computer. Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt), Lambert (Veronica Cartwright) and Kane (John Hurt) shuttle down to the planet LV-426 from which an SOS signal was transmitted. The signal proves to be a warning, with an alien creature attaching itself to Kane’s helmet visor, where it later wreaks death and destruction aboard the Nostromo. Alien, which also features Sigourney Weaver, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto, grossed $ 40.3 million at the American box office, earning the #5 slot on the list of the top moneymaking films of 1979. The famous “Gut Buster” scene is legendary in sci-fi circles, with the creature literally ripping its way out of Kane’s belly while the crew is seated at the dining table. Alien’s tagline says it all: “In space no one can hear you scream.”

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Columbia, 1977)

UFOs and their alien occupants come to Earth in this revered science fiction entry which premiered in New York City on November 15, 1977. The signs of the extraterrestrials’ impending arrival manifest themselves in several ways, including the reappearance of missing World War II fighter planes from 1945 in the Mojave Desert and lineman Roy Neary’s (Richard Dreyfuss) close encounter with an alien spacecraft. Neary and several other “contacted” people journey to the remote site where the U.S. government has determined that the alien spacecraft will land. “Steven Spielberg’s giant, spectacular ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’…is the best – and most elaborate – 1950’s science fiction movie ever made, a work that borrows its narrative shape and its concerns from those earlier films, but enhances them with what looks like the latest developments in movie and space technology,” reported Vincent Canby of The New York Times. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which also features Francois Truffaut, Teri Garr and Melinda Dillon, garnered nine Oscar nominations.

Soylent Green (MGM, 1973)

Based on the 1966 novel Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison, Soylent Green – for your ultimate dining pleasure, heh, heh – premiered in New York City on April 19, 1973. Set in the year 2022, the film depicts the plight of the Earth’s inhabitatants as they struggle to survive on a planet marked by overpopulation and diminishing natural resources. Feeding much of the world is the massive conglomerate the Soylent Corporation, which produces rations in the form of Soylent Red, Soylent Yellow and their newest creation Soylent Green, the latter of which is purportedly derived from “high-energy plankton.” When industrialist William R. Simonson (Joseph Cotten) is murdered, NYPD detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) and his partner Sol Roth (Edward G. Robinson) investigate, with the bloody trail leading back to the Soylent Corporation and the terrible secret they harbor regarding the actual contents of Soylent Green.

Two Chicago businessmen, Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) and John Blane (James Brolin), pay $ 1,000 a day to stay at Delios, a high-tech amusement park comprised of three fantasy venues: Westworld, Romanworld and Medievalworld. Martin and Blane have chosen the former for their adventure, where they battle a menacing robotic gunslinger (Yul Brynner), rob the local bank and bed the pretty, robotic saloon girls. Delios’ sophisticated robots, however, begin malfunctioning, terrorizing both staff and guests as they run amok in the park. After killing John Blane in a fast-draw contest, the high-tech gunslinger sets his sights on Blane’s fleeing buddy, tracking him with infrared vision. “…A science-fiction melodrama about Doomsday in Disneyland,” offered Vincent Canby of The New York Times. The movie’s memorable tagline: “…Where nothing can possibly go wrong!”

The Andromeda Strain (Universal, 1971)

Based on the 1969 novel by Michael Crichton, The Andromeda Strain dropped into movie theaters on March 12, 1971. The storyline is wild, featuring the arrival of a deadly organism from outer space that produces fatal blood clotting in its victims. Trying to contain the deadly visitor are scientists Jeremy Stone (Arthur Hill), Charles Dutton (David Wayne), Mark Hill (James Olson) and Ruth Leavitt (Kate Reid). The Andromeda Strain is crackling good science fiction, as our scientist heroes attempt to isolate the organism and prevent its spread from beyond their high-tech underground facility in Nevada known as Wildfire. “On the level of fiction, ‘The Andromeda Strain’ is a splendid entertainment that will get you worried about whether they’ll be able to contain that strange blob of alien green crystal,” observed Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Omega Man (Warner Bros., 1971)

Richard Matheson’s classic 1954 novel I Am Legend serves as the inspiration for this doomsday thriller set in the mid-to-late 1970s. A biological war waged by China and the Soviet Union has released an apocalyptic plague, wiping out most of the world’s population. One of the few survivors is U.S. Army Colonel Robert Neville, M.D. (Charlton Heston), who had self-administered an experimental vaccine just in time, rendering him immune to the sickness. Perched from his high-rise apartment, the well-armed Neville battles the plague’s night-loving homicidal mutants known as “The Family,” headed by the sinister Brother Jonathan Matthias (Anthony Zerbe). “An extremely literate science-fiction drama…” reported Variety.

Slaughterhouse-Five (Universal, 1972)

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s 1969 novel serves as the basis for this slick science fiction film which debuted on March 15, 1972. The episodic Slaughterhouse-Five stars Michael Sacks as Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes “unstuck in time,” experiencing life simultaneously in three different eras: in the past as an American prisoner of war in Nazi Germany, in the present as an optometrist in New York and in the future as a zoo inhabitant on the planet Tralfamadore. The best sequence may well belong to the past, with Pilgrim witnessing the 1945 Allied fire bombing of Dresden, an event which Kurt Vonnegut Jr. had experienced personally as a young POW.

A Clockwork Orange (Warner Bros., 1971)

Based on the 1962 novel by Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange nabs the title of most disturbing science fiction/fantasy film of the decade. Set in a futuristic London, A Clockwork Orange stars Malcolm McDowell as Alex, the ruthless leader of a small gang of thugs known as the droogs. Murder, rape, home invasion and other violence permeate this picture, including the infamous scene where the ghastly droogs beat a writer (Patrick Magee), with Alex savagely kicking the man while he joyfully croons “Singin’ in the Rain.” A Clockwork Orange garnered four Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Film Editing. A movie definitely not to everyone’s liking.

Rollerball (United Artists, 1975)

William Harrison’s short story “Roller Ball Murder,” first published in the September 1973 edition of Esquire, inspired this sports-gone-mad sci-fi entry. James Caan stars as Jonathan E., the mega superstar of his era who excels in the ultra-violent sport of rollerball. Set in the year 2018, society is now ruled by the multinational corporations, who have replaced war with rollerball as a suitable outlet for the citizenry’s anti-social leanings. Decked out in padded uniforms, helmets and spiked gloves, Jonathan E., leader of the Houston club, along with other participants circle an oval track on roller skates and motorcycles, trying to place an iron ball into a magnetic goal. John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck and Moses Gunn are along for the rocky ride into the future wide world of sports – ah, the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! Now, will you please stand for the playing of our Corporate Hymn?

Alchemy, Science and the Quest for Immortality

My earlier two-episode vampire analysis has prompted me to thinking about the quest for immortality, which is probably as old as mankind. The first known hero story, that of the Sumerian Gilgamesh, has the prince unsuccessfully seeking the plant that would bestow him immortality. In the Bible, the first human beings, Adam and Eve, were apparently created immortal only to lose the gift due to evil temptation. Adam and Eve’s story assumes that humanity was initially meant to be immortal. But if immortality is the natural state of mankind, would it be possible to recover it by some means?

I shall conspicuously pick from the countless attempts at achieving immortality those related to alchemy. Commonly described as the art of making gold, alchemy often had the goal of achieving life-extension or immortality. In fact, scholars consider that life extension, not gold was the foremost goal of Chinese alchemy (1). In the West, the attainment of the elixir vitae was initially secondary to the art of goldmaking (2). The first author to emphasize it was the Arab alchemist Jabir (3). He conceived of the “elixir vitae”, another name for the magical Philosopher’s Stone, which transformed metals into gold. The alchemists who came to possess the Stone would then be expected to live many years, or even forever.

From this concept an entire legend of immortal alchemists was born. One of the earliest embodiments was the French alchemist Nicholas Flamel (1330 – 1418), which was reputed to have faked his own death (4) and was recently featured in a novel as an ‘immortal’ (5). The Renaissance magus Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, though less associated with alchemy, was portrayed as having lived several hundreds of years in Mary Shelley’s The Mortal Immortal (6). Yet perhaps the most influential ‘immortal’ in his age was the mysterious Count of St Germain, whom I have talked about in my previous article. He was reputed to have lived hundreds or even thousands of years, a legend that he apparently cultivated as well (7).

It was in the Renaissance that the idea of ‘elixir vitae’ and of an universal medicine became the main ideal of alchemy. The physician Paracelsus proclaimed that the purpose of alchemists must be to cure illness, rather than make gold (8). His followers dedicated themselves to finding the miraculous elixir vitae. Van Helmont, one of the later alchemists, also believed the prolongation of life was possible, although not immortality (9).

As the rationalism of science progressed in the 1700s, the alchemist’s claims to obtaining a life-extending elixir were attacked as being either absurd (in scientific circles) or demonic (in religiously influenced circles). After all, the Christian Church could only frown upon concerns for the extension of one’s mortal life as opposite to caring for the afterlife. Thus, the image of Faust – the alchemist who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for immortality and pleasure – became widespread in the literature of the 1600 and 1700s (10).

Yet if the 17th and 18th century scientists launched a scathing attack on alchemists for their attempt to extend life, they did not shy away from coveting immortality themselves. In other words, it wasn’t immortality or life extension that they questioned, but the methods of achieving them. For scientists, the only way towards longevity involved scientific experimentation and the use of reason. Thus, Descartes, Francis Bacon, Franklin, and above all the Marquis de Condorcet believed in the possibility of achieving human immortality through science (11). Even Mary Shelley’s father, William Godwin, maintained that the goal of immortality was attainable through human evolution (12). It was mainly against these scientific dreams of immortality that the Romantics conceived the notion of the ‘lonely’ or ‘accursed’ immortal. As Roberts points out, their work suggest that the extension of life can only result in an extension of misery and suffering (13). This is because, for them, the achievement of immortality was pointless without spiritual evolution.

Despite Romantic warnings, the desire for immortality has not ceased to be a human ideal until our very day. Marx, Bergson and several Darwinists thinkers upheld the principle of prolongevity as possible and desirable (14). In the twentieth century, and seeping into ours as well, the possibility of immortality has been hailed by a plethora of semi-sci-fi methods, such as cryonics, mind uploading or cyborgology (transforming humans into cyborgs) (15). By the use of these methods, scientists say, man’s life will be extended indefinitely (16, 17). Yet, if science is often highly optimistic about life extension, the cultural views of physical immortality remain mixed. Pop culture treatments of the vampire or the immortal often harken back to Romanticism, portraying the loneliness, the evil, the boredom or the suffering implied in longevity. Yet in the end, if offered immortality, how many people would actually refuse it? After all, in the absence of an alchemical universal medicine, we do our best to postpone old age or death, by taking pills, healthy foods, beauty products etc – our modern versions of the immortality elixir.
