The Great Lakes Science Center

This irregular and multi-faceted structure of white, gray and glass is anchored by the deeper gray bulbous domed end that houses the Center’s IMAX surround theater. The Science Center is easily located along Lake Erie’s shore, now that a large tri-blade wind turbine and mast have been planted in its front lawn (providing about 1/14th of the facility’s power needs). Another recent addition is the semi-circular array of tilted solar panel shade frames that line the vehicular drop-off at the building’s public entrance.

The Great Lakes Science Center (with its marketing slogan of ‘Great Science’) is dedicated to presenting science and technology interconnected to the environment. A natural focus is the environment of the surrounding Great Lakes region of the upper Midwest. A great many of the Center’s exhibits are interactive displays that make precepts of science and technology accessible to hands-on exploration. The Center’s tripartite emphasis: technology, science phenomena, and the environment of the region.

The Great Lakes Science Center opened its doors in 1996. In recent years, it has expanded its influence both through a school Outreach program, and through a series of summer science camps. The Center is also available for special events and hosts field trips, group tours, and birthday parties. Presentations include both permanent and traveling exhibits, and the IMAX theater circulates a variety of immersive films on science, technology, environments and animals. Under a recently announced agreement, the Visitor Center of NASA Glenn Research Center in Brookpark, Ohio — along with all of its displays and artifacts — will soon be relocated to the Great Lakes Science, which will thenceforth serve as the official NASA Visitor Center to its 300,000 annual visitors.

In addition to its permanent and traveling exhibits and IMAX theater, the Great Lakes Science Center also contains meeting space, lecture hall, restaurant, museum store and parking facility. The Center also opens its doors to the North Coast Harbor’s lakeside promenade, which links to the steamship William G. Mather, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and nearby Voinovich Park.

Internet Integrity

There are a lot of great  business opportunities available on the Internet. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of scams. There are also a lot of unscrupulous people who have joined very reputable systems but market those systems like carnival pitch men. I know because I’ve been burned by some of these people.  Mentors who promise you the moon and then won’t even answer your email once you’ve forked over the big bucks to “Join their team” are one of the most common scams. So what gives?

These people are obviously people of talent who do a great job of getting perfect strangers to pay to become a part of their opportunity. They know how to sell. But they have a short term mentality and are only focused on “what’s in it for me?” These are not the people that will build long term success. At some point their business will come crashing down around them.

Why? The reason is they are focused only on themselves and not focused on serving those who have put their trust (and money) in them. The problem is these people have suffered a breakdown in character.

One of my favorite authors is John Maxwell. Maxwell, an internationally recognized leadership expert talks about this in his great book, “Talent Is Never Enough”. He lays it out very clearly: “Absence of strong character eventually topples talent. Why? Because people cannot climb beyond the limitations of their character. Talented people are sometimes tempted to take shortcuts. Character prevents that. Talented people may feel superior and expect special privileges. Character helps them know better…”

What powerful words those are. Often people are led astray by the lure of power and money and fame. But as it says in Proverbs, “Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.”

There is an old saying that says character is doing the right thing even when nobody is looking. I like that… but I think it is flawed. Someone is always watching…God is always watching.

Strive always to do the right thing and be a person of strong character. You are a gift to the world from God and as Maxwell says  “Character protects that gift.” Approach your internet business with character and integrity. Under promise and over deliver in all your business dealings. Practice servant leadership. Always remember what it is like starting out in a new business and be the person that helps the newbie succeed. It may take a little longer to build your business but people will respect you and the business you build will be a long lasting one that will pay you dividends for years to come.

Using VoIP Termination in Business – Move Ahead

Article by Syedumair Hashmi

VoIP offers a slew of advantages to organizations, making the technology a hot favorite in business circles and helping them condition their network according to the demands of today’s business needs. However, they need to hire the right VoIP service provider to attain their objectives.

VoIP has turned over the predictions of many a communication industry pundit head on who initially put forth the view that it will never become the front line mode of communication. Today, all industry sectors are gradually moving to business VoIP from the conventional PSTN (Public Switch Telephony Network) system. The shift has taken its time, but it is decisive.

VoIP based communication not just helps the businesses bring their telephony bills down, but also improves the way they function in the today’s competitive scenario. It offers a slew of advantages to organizations, making the technology a hot favorite in business circles. It helps them condition their network according to the demands of today’s business needs. An organization which lags behind in implementing the technology finds pulling itself hard in the rat race with the competitors.

VoIP enables features such as Instant Chatting in accelerating business cycles and promote collaborative team culture. Many a time, people prefer Instant Messaging to phone. Web based conferencing is another mode of communication powered by VoIP. Conferences have become an integral part of any business whether it is big or small. It offers the option of video conference with a group of people located all across the world, thus negating any need to fly across thousands of miles just to attend a business meeting.

Conventional PSTN networks cannot support such modes of communication. Additionally, with VoIP technology, users can opt for DID numbers that are ideal for organizations which are operating from different countries. It gets them to get international phone calls from overseas customers without their customers being aware of the fact as they are charged locally for it. The service is particularly beneficial for call centers as they need to provide customer service to people residing in other countries.

‘Click to Call’ option provided on several websites is also an example of VoIP powered services. VoIP call termination integrates the Internet with the phone call enabling the system. It shows how the technology merges voice and data networks. It enables business organizations to immediately connect to their clients. It also helps in raising customer satisfaction, which is something every business strives for.

Business houses have emerged as the final winner, thanks to the evolution of VoIP. However, for reaping the benefits, subscription to a VoIP service provider is necessary. You can subscribe to retail VoIP service providers who are themselves associated with wholesale VoIP carrier services. While a retail operator will be providing services to the end customers, it is the wholesale provider who provides the network infrastructure, software and technical team which makes the operations possible.

A robust VoIP network will ensure excellent technical operations, flawless exchange of data and non-interrupted service availability. Their technicians keep constant tab on the network and do the troubleshooting if required. In fact, quality of a retail operator depends of the wholesale VoIP operator behind it. If a retailer is backed by a reputable wholesale carrier, you can expect that he will be providing reliable services.

Emerging Technologies and Their Impact on Society

Article by Hamid Hameed

In low tech local environment where an overwhelming majority is still struggling to access and find required information, there are some high end-users who are already complaining of information overload.

Busy executives, decision makers and other people taking advantage of computing in work and meaningful pursuits need all the quality information they can get. They turn to the web because it has amassed huge amounts of information in almost all areas of human activities. But what is information in the first place? Technically speaking, “information is stimuli that have meaning in some context for its receiver. When information is entered into and stored in a computer, it is generally referred to as data – information translated into a form that is more convenient to move or process. When information is packaged or used for understanding or doing something, it is known as knowledge – to an enterprise or an individual, the possession of information or the ability to quickly locate it.” For the purpose here, I think the term ‘information’ is the correct description of some of what is available on the web, rather than knowledge or wisdom.

Advances in web technologies and their growing usage have made the production, distribution, and sharing of information so much easier than what it was only a decade ago. It has reduced the time span of business practices and processes, which would otherwise have taken very long time to be implemented on ground. But information comes with an additional excess of irrelevant junk, unclear and inaccurate data, even conflicting, making it becomes difficult to sift what is important from what is not. This “excess information beyond what is desired or needed by any user requiring non productive processing” is called information overload. The number of work hours available and the inherent human capacity to absorb information have remained almost same over years whereas the need to access, understand and digest information had gone up many times.

Local market scouting reveals that most economic concerns have yet not fully appreciated possibilities offered by IT. Notable exceptions apart, computer technologies have not been integrated within corporate systems as of yet.

For many a CEO, president and chairman of companies the connected computers set on their tables are just another part of office equipment only to be used by others. But for inspiring examples that have taken the initiative and employed the technology, information is moving from being a marginal, specialist responsibility to being a central part of every business operation. Demand for executives, managers and employees, in these futuristic organisations, to become more aware of and prepared for handling the opportunities being offered by growing information has increased.

In this milieu, high end users are getting overwhelmed by the magnitude of information from multiple sources. What is more, sometime the required information is not at the surface. It is often difficult to understand if a web article is just a sales-pitch, self-serving opinion, a research study skewed by producers and sponsors with something to gain or is it factual. There is a lot of crap in other forms. Even search engines are selling result placements.

Having quality information in time is good and productive. With more and more information coming from so many different sources, users must be able to determine the quality of information before putting it to use. But determining quality can be tough. Many users are not particularly good at managing and filtering information that comes their way. Technologies so far can handle quantity but are still not mature enough to recognize quality of information. Which is why information overload gets unhelpful for those who are facing it? The avalanche of information, as per experts, in extreme cases may lead to unwanted results in the form of stress, frustration or physical illness.

“The situation is worst where organizations are in transition – changing from the old style of handling information to IT or where IT dependent new generation of executives is taking over family business enterprises,” says Dr. Norbert, an architect who uses the internet to do businesses in field of call centres. “I have to keep up to date on the technology sector. I have to review feedback from clients and also see what competitors are doing by visiting their web sites, reading online press releases and newsletters.

The information that I get is one of the most important tools in my sales game but I am afraid that I miss so much,” he adds.

David, an astute businessman running a money-changing concern in Lahore, has two computer screens on his work desk (also a number of telephones and mobile phone sets). Sometimes his assistants bring yet other mobile for him to answer when he is trying to focus on the rapidly rising and falling currency rates in the world money market. He also has to answer chat signals from fellow money changers and continuously watch what is coming in his inbox, sometimes firing off instant replies. He says, “Given the nature of my business and rapid fluctuation in currency rates I have to keep a constant watch on the global money market. This is what I do last thing before going to bed and first when I get up in the morning before coming to the office.

In addition, I also have to follow important events in the world that can cast tangible effects on economies of the world. But it is difficult to keep track of it all. I want sometime to myself but it is really not possible in this line of business.” Before employing IT, the first piece of paper Senta Kurt used to face each morning after coming in his office was a previous day inventory report from three different tent and canvas products manufacturing and exporting units he is managing in Kot Lakhpat.

“Before we employed IT, night staff used to produce required inventory report. Now my inventory is on networked computers and is up-to-date all the time. I can see it any time. Basing on this I can shift resources from one unit to another and control production. But when it comes to information required for running my business in global market, it sometime is daunting to find what I am looking for and to weed through the junk.” There must be an equilibrium point somewhere. Users have to define precisely what they need and in how much detail. There are technological fixes like using filters, email managers, favourites and the like to prioritize the coming information. Some other intriguing technologies to how people mine the Internet for information are in the pipe. But technical solutions alone may not be enough. “They can sometime aggravate the overload problem, because instead of how much one needs, they make it possible to get more. But given enough time and practice, one gets wise in distinguishing what is important in any particular field,” thinks Umar Manzoor.

In response to a query, Tatiana Andronache, Canadian Information Systems Professional emailed, “Information Overload is a fascinating phenomenon every web user experience at least some of the times. I have no idea what humankind is going to do with all the information: writings, analysis, images, sound tracks, movies, websites, you name it. People do not seem to be healthier, richer or happier because they have them. At a personal level, I deal through prioritizing, time-boxing and, when possible, multi-tasking.

What gets done, gets done, what not – oh, well! I avoid time suckers such as surfing the internet (I go to sites where I have business and finish quickly), no forums, chats, very little TV. Radio is a favourite because does not tie me up.” The first step to combat possible information overload is to identify the needs and take control. There is no universal formula fitting for users of different areas of interest therefore everyone may make own road map and shortcuts. “Knowing what is needed and cutting out unnecessary clutter outside the desired scope saves a lot of time,” says Dr. Norbert. Then users should decide what is manageable while taking into account time availability, ability to absorb and retain information. This involves establishing limits to the information hunting process and allows doing first thing first. The users should also realize when to stop gathering information and move on to making use of it. And acknowledge that none can get to know everything.

Information has made a huge difference in the world of business in particular, and chances are that it will continue to. Those who are using it purposefully can sure make their way with it and combat the information overload.

What Technology Recruiters Look For

Article by Kforce

The secret is out! After surveying dozens of Kforce recruiters in our Tampa based National Recruiting Center (NRC), we narrowed down the top tips technology professionals can use to get noticed. From entry level to seasoned professionals, we asked our technology recruiters questions on how they search for candidates and what they look for on resumes, online profiles and job applications.

When it comes to your resume or application, recruiters want to quickly find the most current information on your background and experience. Especially in the technology field, an online resume is a must.

An average of 46 percent of our recruiters surveyed say they use social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter to source candidates and view profiles of potential candidates. By updating your experience and contact information on these sites you can provide a recruiter with a fast and easy way to find your most up-to-date information. “With a quick glance on social media sites like LinkedIn, we can usually see what the candidate has been doing for the last year,” says Andrew Moberg, NRC Manager of Online Sourcing.

Moberg suggests using combinations of verbs and nouns to describe what you do and what types of software you are using on social media sites and job applications. For example, don’t just mention you have experience with QA, instead specify that you have experience in testing web based applications or reporting platforms.Applying keywords and verbs help recruiters better identify and search for your skills. Moberg says the bottom line for candidates is to have enough information on your resume, online profile or job application to show a recruiter who you are, and most importantly what you are capable of accomplishing.

Entry Level Candidates

Entry level candidates are commonly defined as those professionals with four years of working experience or less. Our recruiters surveyed say the best candidates in this category should have a bachelor’s degree and ideally technical certifications relevant to their specific field, such as A+, MSCE, CCNA/CCNP, or Oracle Professional. However, if you don’t have a degree, Moberg says you should be prepared to explain what experience you have to compensate, whether it’s an internship or skills learned from a previous position.

If you are looking for your first job in the technology field, just over 90 percent of recruiters said the majority of jobs available at the entry level can include work in desktop support, help desk, or administration. These positions may provide the necessary experience you will need throughout your technology career and may also help you land your next job opportunity.

“Our clients will always need desktop and administrative people,” says Moberg. “If you are getting into a large enterprise organization this is a great way to get your foot in the door.”

Mid-Level Candidates

Once you are ready to take the next step in your career, recruiters will expect you to have between five and seven years experience. An overwhelming 83 percent of our recruiters surveyed also say experience with enterprise level clients is important at the mid-career level, no matter what size company you want to work for in the future.

“Enterprise level companies want proof that you are able to work with a larger infrastructure and complex organization,” says Moberg. Candidates with enterprise level experience are also a hot commodity for smaller companies who want to grow their business.

While it is important to have experience with a large organization or infrastructure, recruiters typically look for that experience without gaps of unemployment. Before the recession, recruiters would likely overlook candidates who went without a job for months at a time. In 2011 though, recruiters now say they are more forgiving.

“We take unemployment gaps into consideration, but people still need to be able to show a constant career course,” says Moberg. “At this point you are likely an expert at something, so you have to be able to take 60 seconds to brag about yourself and tell the recruiter why they should consider you, over others in the running for the same job.”

If you have been without a job for three months or more, Moberg says it’s important to get back into the game. Be flexible on your commute or willing to take a salary cut, but also let your recruiter know your career goals for getting back on the path to success.

Senior Level Candidates

With seven or more years of experience, most recruiters would classify you as a senior level candidate. Recruiters surveyed not only expect senior level candidates to be an expert in their certifications, but these candidates should also have extensive experience in the software development life-cycle.

“They should have been a part of the design, analysis, development, and testing at this point,” says Moberg. “They should be able to talk to the business owners and the tech guys who speak in code.”

Additionally, senior level candidates should be comfortable with social media platforms more than any other career level. Fifty-five percent of Kforce recruiters said they actively look for information on experience, past employment, and referrals on social media sites. At this level, recruiters use LinkedIn as a way to qualify which candidates are the best fit for a job, but Moberg says candidates can also use social media to their own advantage.

“For example, they can go on the Java webpage on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter and get the latest news on different technologies and keep their skills up-to-date,” adds Moberg. While a senior level candidate may not have experience with a particular version of software, this can show a recruiter or employer that the candidate is knowledgeable on the latest updates, even if they have been out of work for an extended period of time.

Moving Forward

No matter what stage you are at in your technology career, 67 percent of Kforce recruiters agree that keeping in touch with your recruiter is essential. Whether you check in once a week or just drop a line to inform them that you completed your latest certification, staying in touch is the key to maintaining a good relationship with your recruiter.

Additionally, when your recruiter reaches out to you with new job opportunities that you could be a good fit for, inform them of your availability. Know exact details when your current contract end date is, and whether the contract has the potential to be extended so that you can plan for alternatives. If you are willing to start work right away, make sure you truly are available. Remember to take family vacations or paid-time off into mind before telling your recruiter your optimal start date.

In the end, our technology recruiters agree that all clients want the same thing from potential candidates at every level — someone who can walk in the door and have the skills necessary to perform the job on the first day. By updating your online resume, using keywords to describe your experience, and staying in touch with your recruiter you can easily become more informed on what opportunities you may qualify for. With the secrets behind what Kforce technology recruiters look for, we hope you will be able to stand out in the crowd and help your recruiter zero in on the right job for you.

Office Technology – Computer Accessories

New age office technology features computer accessories which have revolutionized the way we work with computers. Businessmen and corporate enterprises have found that owning a laptop or a desktop computer alone wouldn’t suffice. There are a lot of complementary components that need to go along with them to establish a full-fledged working environment.

Computer accessories aid in getting better results. They have specific purposes and benefits. Take for instance a situation where you find it difficult to view your laptop screen; you can always opt for a laptop raiser to adjust its height to your specific needs. This eliminates the constant need for bending and helps you maintain a proper posture, thereby avoiding back related ailments. Similarly, a notebook arm lets you adjust the positioning of the laptop for easy handling. This is best suited for labs and offices where there is space constraint and people are constantly on the move.

Advanced office technology solutions include the latest computer accessories, which have made the experience of working more pleasurable.

Unlike earlier, when stress was a major factor affecting efficiency, today we have comfortable, anti-stress components that ease computer usage. These include gel based wrist-rest (keyboard) and mouse pads which help reduce pressure from long duration typing and handling of the mouse.

Computer monitor accessories are among the most sought after office technology solutions. Monitors emit harmful radiation and the constant glare affects our eyes. The use of anti-glare radiation filters on the monitor helps computer workaholics attain relief from headaches and watery eyes.

For corporates and big businesses, computer network accessories are definitely a boon.

It is convenient to establish a computer network with the right accessories than having to run about for one thing or the other.

In an effort to ensure state-of-the-art office technology, manufacturers introduce innovative computer accessories on a regular basis. You can find cleaning kits for printers and monitors, CD/DVD lens cleansers, toolkit, computer stands and a lot more. There are many discount computer accessories stores which offer competitive pricing.

Has Society Become Controlled by Technology?

As advancement in technology makes a vast amount of improvement each year, it’s hard not to wonder whether society is starting to become controlled by technology. The vast majority of people believe that society is slowly being controlled by technology, although there are some who may beg to differ as they believe that humans have full control over technology, and that technology is a tool used for our convenience. But the fact remains that as long as we are reliant on technology, no matter how much control we seem to have over it, we are slowly being controlled by it as it ebbs its way into our daily lives.

From the home appliances we use, to the cars we drive, and computers we use for our work, all the way to the manufacturing of baby prams and the food we eat, there is hardly a device that we own and use that does not have technology in it or has been made without using technology. Though in this sense, technology has not literally taken control over society, but rather we have come to place technology as a central role in our lives and we have become reliant on it.

Consider this: when a pilot is navigating a plane, he has equipment that aids in his piloting of the plane to his destination, and the equipment no doubt relies on technology. When that equipment is faulty or malfunctions, although the pilot is in control of all the equipment, his control and having the equipment as tools does not determine what happens next. It is the technology which has malfunctioned that has an upper hand rather than the pilot.

Nowadays we are bombarded by the technology in the forms of the latest HD/plasma televisions, to the latest operating such or gadgets for computers. Even the rate at which new models of digital camcorders, cameras, mobile phones and mp3 players, are released into the market is at an incredibly fast rate. Jobs in areas such as engineering, accounting, teaching, and media, all rely on technology in the form of software programs and gadgets to make the job easier. As such, it can be said that technology is making its presence known in our daily lives and society is slowly but surely being controlled by technology.

People have become “lazy” when it comes to doing certain things and are starting to become so reliant on technology that it is frightening to think how life would be without it. Technology is like a double-edged sword, it can be useful and helps us in over daily lives, but there is also a cost to it. If we were to use it correctly, the consciences would not be so dire. It is after all an undeniable fact that technology has become an intricate part of our lives.
